Job Functions / Responsibilities

Under the Co-optimization of Vehicles and Routes (CoVaR) program, PACCAR proposes a holistic approach to improving overall transportation system efficiency by addressing technical barriers at each stage of the transportation system i.e., supply chain, vehicle technology, and human factors (driver).

Non-optimal driving accounts for upto 30% of energy losses in a modern class 8 vehicle. Although, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as predictive and adaptive cruise control can help mitigate the influence of poor driving behavior, the operational design domain (ODD) for these technologies are currently limited to highway driving. For City and Pick-up & Delivery applications, driver-coaching features that reward the driver for optimal driving can help increase energy efficiency using simple vehicle architectures. Additionally, the cost of training a driver for commercial applications is a significant financial and operational burden on fleets and operators. At the same time, the trucking industry is facing unprecedented attrition in drivers because of e.g. changes in demography. Automated driver coaching can aid the industry by accelerate the skills development of a new driver. Technologies such as machine learning and edge artificial intelligence offer opportunities to deploy customized driver coaching features to train and reward the driver on good driving behavior. For these technologies to be effective however, the algorithms must be able to identify the driver to deliver targeted driver coaching recommendations that leverage past driving behavior.

The goal of this intern assignment is to develop an edge machine learning/artificial intelligence system to identify the driver with minimal additional sensors. The task for the assignment includes:

  1. Literature review to determine current state-of-the art and limitations

  2. Review of low-cost sensors that augment vehicle CAN for accurate driver identification

  3. Development edge architecture that integrates vehicle CAN data with additional sensors

  4. Development of Proof-of-concept hardware and software

  5. Integration and Validation on a PACCAR truck

  6. Data analysis and recommendations for further development
