Chemist - Polymer Synthesis Lab at PPG INDUSTRIES INC in Milford, Ohio

Job Description:

The Chemist - Polymer Synthesis Lab will be responsible for polymer development through hands-on laboratory experimentation to support coating development for PPG Packaging Coatings. This includes synthesis of various polymers with different polymerization techniques, physical testing of polymers, problem solving of new and existing polymers!

Key Responsibilities :

• Maintain a safe working environment and follow lab safety protocols by ensuring the safe operation of all equipment and chemical handling necessary, and confirm the proper safety equipment, procedures, and housekeeping.
• Follow polymer synthesis procedures, perform resin physical testing and generate reliable data in a timely manner.
• Observe experimental details and maintain good documentation of details and results in a laboratory notebook.
• Assist batch scale-up by providing synthesis details to engineers and observing the batch as needed.
• Communicate effectively within the work team through written documentation and verbal summaries.
• Share ancillary duties such as equipment maintenance and calibration, ordering raw materials and lab supplies.
• Work with supervisor in setting SMART project goals, and successfully fulfill the established project timeline.

Qualifications :

• B.S. degree in a technical field such as Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Engineering required.
• 1 - 3 years of experience in a coatings formulation laboratory or plant setting preferred.
• Basic chemistry, polymer, and materials knowledge.
• Must have high attention to detail and good organizational and time management skills.
• Good written and verbal communication skills, the ability to multitask, and the ability to analyze data.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in particular) is required. Strong Excel skills preferred.
• Ability to perform in a team environment and encourage teamwork and information sharing.
