YOUR ROLE


  • Provide paralegal support to Patent Team, including patent preparation, filing, prosecution, and maintenance.
  • Anticipate upcoming docket activities, determine priorities, compose routine correspondences, proof documents, and act as liaison between Patent Team and in-house clients and outside firms.
  • Monitor and update internal docketing system, including document processing from USPTO and foreign agents, and actively managing dockets for multiple attorneys (both in-person and remote).
  • Organize and provide support to patent decision meetings with multiple business partners.
  • Assist attorneys with tasks involved in licensing and agreement work related to patents.
  • Assist in maintenance and organization of patent department files and agreement database, including setting up files for non-application matters being handled by Patent Team and archiving inactive files.
  • Process domestic patent honoraria information for inventors.
  • Run reports from docketing database as may be requested or needed by Patent Team.

YOUR SKILLS

  • To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:
  • Patent database management - Extensive experience in using and establishing workflows within a patent docketing system, preferably Unycom.
  • IT skills - highly proficient knowledge of Office 365 and ability to learn/use patent database and software that support patent prosecution work.
  • Problem Solving - Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; gathers and analyzes information skillfully.
  • Interpersonal Skills - Focuses on solving conflict, not blaming; maintains confidentiality.
  • Oral Communication - Listens carefully and gets clarification when needed; responds well to questions.
  • Written Communication - Writes clearly and informatively; edits work for spelling and grammar; varies writing style to meet needs; able to read and interpret written information.
  • Teamwork - Balances team and individual responsibilities; able to work effectively as part of a team, locally, remotely and internationally.
  • Professionalism - Accepts responsibility for own actions; follows through on commitments.
  • Quality - Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; looks for ways to improve and promote quality.
  • Initiative - Takes independent actions and calculated risks; asks for and offers help when needed.
  • Candidate must have at least 5 years of recent, relevant experience, with preference given to candidates with corporate patent department experience.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal attorney supervision on a variety of projects simultaneously.
  • Must be highly diligent, capable of working in a demanding, fast-paced environment, and flexible in accepting new roles and responsibilities.
  • Must have direct experience with and current in-depth knowledge of patent prosecution rules and procedures.
  • Must possess basic understanding of intellectual property and contract law.
  • College degree preferred.
  • Paralegal certification strongly preferred.
