Summary:

The Director, Manufacturing Engineering leads an engineering team which provides support to Dexcom's internal manufacturing lines located in San Diego. This team is also responsible for development projects related to NPI and product performance. The San Diego Manufacturing Engineering team collaborates with the R&D and Development Engineering teams in order to improve product performance and NPI. Close collaboration occurs between Dexcom's internal and external manufacturing facilities in order to identify cost-saving and continuous improvement opportunities; and drive process improvements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Works on complex problems in which analysis or situations or date requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors.

  • Exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

  • Ensures budgets, schedules, and performance requirements are met.


  • Responsible for ensuring that department is committed to and conforms to the company quality system procedures as documented.

  • Plan and direct all aspects of sensor and Tx process engineering activities.

  • Sets goals, establishes priorities, manages resources, develops concept and approaches, reviews projects progress and results, and makes management decisions.

  • Supervises subordinate personnel including hiring, determining workload and delegating assignments, training, monitoring and evaluating performance, coaching, initiating corrective or disciplinary actions, and establishing and sustaining long-term human resources and skill requirements for the engineering or operations teams.


  • Increases the overall productivity of the engineering or operations organization as evidenced by lower cost, higher quality solutions provided on time.

  • Establishes overall direction while creating and implementing a vision for continual improvement of engineering and operations services at a detail level as well as higher organizational level; work with others to establish methodologies to resolve process issues.

  • Manages all aspects of product development or operations cycle within operational budgets and functional goals of the facility.

  • Provides people leadership focused upon personal and collective accountability while fostering an environment that enhances personal growth and career development through mentoring and training; performance management and challenging the organization to strive for higher performance levels.

  • Builds a reputation for the engineering or operations organization of high integrity, competitive leadership, and sustained performance by delivering quality product on a timely basis.

  • Ensures all engineering or operations projects, initiatives, and processes conform to all applicable requirements and specifications imposed by the company, the customer and/or the industry.

  • Develops clear and effective performance metrics for the engineering or operations organization, as well as individuals, measuring the effectiveness; uses metric trends and data to drive the business and decisions therein.

  • Manages engineering or operations issues by acting as the primary liaison with other members of management, engineering, manufacturing, clinical and regulatory, quality assurance, quality control, and marketing.


  • Directly responsible for implementation and maintenance of engineering or operations department procedures. Reports on the performance of engineering or operations. Plans and maintains departmental budget for the effective operation of the department.

  • This position assumes and performs other duties as required.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree with 15+ years of industry experience. 9+ years of successful management experience in relevant industry.

Functional Description: Management

Oversees the activities related to the technical support and sustaining engineering functions in a product manufacturing area. Plans and directs implementation of equipment and process modifications to improve production efficiencies, manufacturing techniques and production yields for existing products. Acts as engineering liaison with product design and development to ensure processes and designs are compatible. Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.

  • Reviews objectives to determine success of operation. Involved in developing, modifying and executing company policies that affect immediate operations and may also have company-wide effect.

  • Regularly interacts with executives and/or external parties on matters effecting the function.

  • Oversees policies and procedures for immediate function.

  • Participates in corporate development of methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for projects, programs, and people.

  • Manages the activities of a functional area and/or external service providers.

  • People management responsibilities include hiring / terminations, performance reviews, career development coaching and compensation decisions.

Workplace Type:

  • The Workplace Type for this role is Assigned Desk. Based on the nature of your role you will have an assigned desk or office located at a Dexcom site and should plan to be onsite approximately 4-5 days per week.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

May direct and control the activities of one or more functional areas, divisions, product groups or service areas through senior managers who have overall responsibility for the successful operation of those assigned areas evaluation of this area. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Language Skills: Must be able to communicate effectively in English. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
