Paint Engineer

Plans, directs, analyze and coordinates manufacturing processes for continuous improvement in conjunction with Morgan Olson's Strategic Plan. This position is involved in the maintenance and improvement of processes and systems used in the painting of product.

Essential Functions and Activities:

  • Develops, evaluate, and improve manufacturing methods, utilizing knowledge of product design, materials and parts, fabrication processes, tooling and production equipment capabilities, assembly methods, and quality control standards.


  • Troubleshoots day-to-day paint processing problems, initiates solutions, and follows-up to evaluate effectiveness of changes to ensure practical cleaning, preparation, masking, painting, curing, and paint rework of production material.


  • Analyze and plan work force utilization, space requirement, and workflow, and designs layout of equipment and workspace for maximum efficiency using the company's PPS system utilizing Lean Manufacturing processes


  • Works with Engineering and programming on material requirements and sheet utilization for maximum sheet utilization through nesting programs.


  • Confers with planning and design staff concerning product design and tooling to ensure efficient Lean production methods.


  • Confers with vendors to determine product specifications and arrange for purchase of equipment, materials, or parts, and evaluates products according to specifications and quality standards.


  • Estimates production times, staffing requirements, and related costs to provide information for management decisions.


  • Confers with management, engineering, and other staff regarding manufacturing capabilities, production schedules, and other considerations to facilitate production processes.


  • Applies statistical methods to estimate future manufacturing requirements and potential.


  • Drives defects to root cause, implements countermeasure, and reports Customer concern response.


  • Pilot review product changes and coordination.


  • Utilizes statistical data to establish base-line metrics, opportunity justification, project prioritization, and gauging / reporting improvement.


  • Responsibilities may also include: maintaining records; purchasing; and managing staff and budgets.


  • Supports and participates in Morgan Olson's PPS team efforts.


  • Adheres to Quality policy by exceeding customer expectations, being customer focused and supporting continuous improvement activities.


  • Adheres to Safety policies and practices behavioral based safety 100% of the time.


  • Other duties as assigned.

    Essential Qualifications:



  • B. S. in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Industrial Technology or similar preferred.


  • In lieu of technical degree, must have a minimum of 5 years experience in a technical manufacturing engineering role supporting shop floor paint operations in an automotive or similar manufacturing facility.

    Critical Technical Skills:



  • In addition to degree, must have a minimum of 3 years experience supporting shop floor paint operations in an automotive or similar manufacturing facility.


  • This position requires thorough knowledge and demonstrated experience in automotive liquid (wet-on-wet) paint processes, and deep understanding of how paint process parameters and paint chemistry impact quality.


  • In addition, this position requires thorough knowledge of manufacturing concepts, including print reading, manufacturing bill of material development, time studies, line balancing, ergonomics, and contamination control.


  • Must demonstrate high proficiency in computer skills with ability to learn various web-based and legacy systems. Must be proficient in MS PowerPoint, word, and excel.Knowledgeable of Lean Manufacturing Concepts and Statistical Analysis and reporting


  • Strong communication skills: Verbal, Written
