The Wall Street Journal is looking for news photo editors to work on our Speed & Trending photo desk.

You will work as part of a fast-paced photo team with a focus on delivering the timely news our digital readers want and need, driven by the Journal's coverage priorities and audience data. This group at the heart of the newsroom is responsible for being the first word on many of the most important stories of the day, reporting and photo editing with speed, precision and authority across subject areas. The team's breaking news remit will range widely across subjects, from business to general news around the country and beyond. The team will operate in close coordination with other reporting groups across the Journal.

In addition to breaking news, this team will look for smart opportunities to join the conversation on other trending stories and topics.

We're looking for a photo editor with great range and journalistic integrity. You should be a news omnivore who can produce breaking news photo assignments as needed, perform strong agency and social media research, and work effectively within a large newsroom setting with bureaus around the world.

This role requires some schedule flexibility -- the desk will be operating from early morning to late evening, seven days a week. You will report to the Deputy Director of Photography, Speed Desk. While you will likely start the job working remotely, you will eventually be based in our New York office.

You will:
  • Work on a team of breaking and trending news photo editors
  • Work closely with the Speed & Trending coverage chief, a team of reporters and publishing editors, SEO editors, strategy editors and our platform teams
  • Pitch and produce coverage ideas
  • Display commitment to digital best practices and continuous improvement as we work together to refine the content package and publishing expectations, and give our audience the content they want and need.

You have:
  • Excellent news judgment and fast digital editing skills
  • Strong organizational and communication abilities
  • Experience working in a fast-paced news environment and collaborating across teams
  • The drive to break stories, monitor social media and news, pitch ideas and follow leads
  • Solid understanding of and appreciation for audience data and SEO-friendly presentation
  • A thorough understanding of the brand values and mission of The Wall Street Journal and how our journalism should be selected, executed and presented in line with those values.
  • Knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media tools such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter
