Summary of Job Duties:

Summary:
The Content Specialist will write news articles and web stories to communicate the impact of work being done by the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. The writer will work with Extension faculty and staff to tell compelling stories about the work of the Cooperative Extension Service, part of the Division of Agriculture. The writer will participate in media relations by developing media lists, creating and delivering on-target pitches for stories and being of service to journalists seeking information for stories they generate.

Duties:
The writer will be expected to:

Write news and feature stories that convey the relevance and value of Extension work in meeting the missions of the Division. Establish and maintain good working relationships with faculty and staff in multiple departments. Frame stories to maximize news value. Understand and translate complex scientific concepts for the average reader. Edit and review stories written by other Communications personnel. Be a self-starter who doesn't wait on assignments but seeks out new story opportunities.

Develop and maintain working relationships with relevant reporters, editors and other influencers.

Edit existing evergreen website content and write new content as needed. Assist with social media content development. Assist with other forms of content, including writing video scripts, creating PowerPoint presentations, and developing content for social media campaigns.

Utilize all available tools to achieve a high level of accuracy and precision in all written work.

Take advantage of internal and external professional development opportunities and share relevant information within and outside the department through formal and informal training.



Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor of Arts/Sciences Degree in journalism, communications discipline or related field from an accredited college or university.Some travel will be required; therefore, applicants must be able to qualify to operate a motor vehicle for the purpose of state business.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Two years of experience writing and editing,

  • Knowledge of agricultural issues

  • Photography skills would be a plus

  • Social media experience a plus

  • Familiarity with Creative Cloud

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Strong writing/reporting techniques to make stories appealing for news media and public

  • Excellent writing and storytelling skills - must have a strong command of the English language and grammar

  • Journalistic integrity

  • Self-editing skills - meticulous attention to detail is critical

  • Ability to demonstrate solid news judgment

  • Familiarity with AP writing style

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and complete projects on time.

  • Ability and desire to quickly and efficiently learn new skills and learn from others

  • Detail oriented with excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills
