Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Engineering ..... group is seeking forward-thinking, professionals interested in exploring a technical career as a Computational Scientist.

This role will provide expertise to the.....program and support seismic safety of INL nuclear operations.

Responsibilities Include:

The computational scientist in this role will help develop and document INL's advanced multiphysics analysis software, with an emphasis on development of computational solid mechanics and heat transfer capabilities used by the Bison and Grizzly codes. The person holding this position develops models of specific material behaviors, creates simulations of completed or planned experiments, and prepares verification and validation studies that increase confidence in code predictions. The role includes investigating novel computational technologies that positively influence the solid mechanics and heat transfer capabilities being developed. The role demands excellence in engineering software development and testing. The role requires development of fundamental mechanics capabilities in MOOSE (mooseframework.inl.gov).

The person in this position is expected to be a leader in the scientific and engineering community. This involves working with others at INL to define research directions and to develop programs to push advancement of computational mechanics technology at INL. This also involves developing and maintaining contacts in the scientific community that can lead to broader application of INL's tools and further funding for research.

Expectations inherent in this role include:


  • Utilizing expertise in areas such as software development, computational thermomechanics, finite element methods, advanced numerical methods, parallel computing, nonlinear solvers, preconditioning, meshing, structural mechanics, fracture mechanics (including the use of phase field fracture technology), constitutive modeling (including plasticity and thermal creep modeling), contact mechanics, computational material science, coupling strategies, multiscale methods, and time integration

  • Demonstrating expertise in C++, git, MacOS/Linux, LaTeX

  • Being a strong asset to our mature, high-energy R&D team and working effectively in isolation, as a team member, and as an internal research project leader

  • Documenting work and maintaining a record of sponsor satisfaction and support

  • Publishing research in peer-reviewed journals and presenting research at technical conferences

  • Providing peer review of others' research

  • Developing plans for new research areas

  • Assisting with successful proposals and securing external funding

  • Initiating novel, innovative research and engineering programs that impact scientific problem solving, tackling complex technology issues facing the nation

Minimum Requirements:

Required


  • PhD in civil, mechanical, aerospace or similar engineering field with a focus on computational solid mechanics or related discipline

  • Evidence of expertise in computational solid/structural mechanics and software development practices

  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills in the English language

  • Ability to obtain and retain approval to access the analysis codes under development

  • Must be able to work in a culturally diverse environment......

Preferred Requirements:


  • Appreciable knowledge of numerical methods, computational science, scientific computing, and scientific software engineering

  • Ability to germinate, coordinate, and execute projects and programs

  • Ability to organize activities relative to project scope, milestones, and products

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate productively with others

  • Demonstrated ability to conceive and execute computational mechanics research

  • Excellent technical writing and oral communication skills
