Job Description:

3D Systems is a technological and market leader in 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing technologies. Our extensive and versatile portfolio of 3D printing systems, material solutions, software, processes, and applications enable broad markets to transform traditional manufacturing processes and enable applications that were previously impossible through advanced manufacturing techniques. It is the goal of this position to broaden and secure the science and technology pipeline and establish 3D Systems as the global leader in Advanced Manufacturing Innovation.

The role:

The Chief Scientist will have primary responsibility for:

• driving innovation outcomes,
• working with teams to establish R&D goals and build the R&D pipeline,
• technical oversight of the intellectual property portfolio,
• technology transfer, and
• interfacing with the global AM research community

The Chief Scientist will integrate and coordinate our global R&D specialists across the breadth of technical offerings within the company. You will work to help coordinate vision, strategy and the internal systems and processes that will secure 3D Systems' long term technical leadership through:

• Key Partnerships
• IP Strategy and Steering
• Establishing and maintaining an External Technology Advisory Counsel
• Helping secure Research Grants
• Establishing and maintaining relationships with key Universities & National Labs
• Ensuring the company is investing in Fundamental Science both internally and externally through universities, internships, fellowships, sponsored research, and consortia
• Helping develop a pipeline of technical talent
• Being active in Technical Conferences
• Coordinating our efforts with Industry Standards committees
• Establishing and maintaining an Internal Innovation Counsel
• Strategic Mergers & Acquisitions
• Product Roadmapping

Through continual and pervasive improvement of technical resources, organizational infrastructure and process, this individual will drive business growth and competitive advantage, while creating new product opportunities for the organization. The individual will be responsible for managing and providing leadership to a small team and be expected to collaborate successfully with the business leads in the product and 3D printer teams globally.

- Build partnerships with AM ecosystem participants

- Participate in the strategic marketing of the company's products

- Speak at technical trade shows, conferences and meetings on behalf of the company

- Perform executive duties as assigned by the leadership team

- Serve as the company's most senior executive guiding the company's global product innovation strategy

- Serve as the main resource to the C-Suite for matters relating to research, product innovation and technology.

- Participate in presentation of corporate goals, interests or products to clients, practitioners, providers, community and business groups, social agencies, and government bodies

- Assist the sales team in presenting the scientific and technical face of the company during appropriate presentations Qualifications

Technical capabilities - A minimum of 20 years' experience with additive manufacturing and 3D printing technology with knowledge of and ability to predict where the industry is headed, what the art of the possible will be, and how it plays out based on evolution of technology

Education - PhD degree in a technical field related to Additive Manufacturing

Operational experience - Experience running a successful R&D organization, preferably leveraging both internal and external sources of innovation and funding

Commercial acumen - Experience commercializing innovative products - business acumen - potential interface with customers and development of business plans for new ideas

Customer-centric innovator - A clear record of thinking beyond the existing playbook; an intrinsic ability to get to the heart of technical issues and win by anticipating customer wants and needs
