Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Integrated Energy and Market Analysis Department is seeking forward-thinking, professionals interested in exploring a technical career as a Simulation Lead for Innovative Nuclear Energy Solutions.

This role will provide expertise to multiple programs.

Responsibilities Include:

The Simulation Lead for Innovative Nuclear Energy Solutions will coordinate and support the development of modeling, simulation, and optimization tools in support of multiple programs. The developed suite of tools will support the design and dynamic simulation of physical facilities (e.g., nuclear plants, hydrogen production, other industry applications) and conduct of technoeconomic analysis to assess both technical feasibility and economic feasibility when operated within identified regions. Facilities of particular interest could leverage multiple clean energy resources (e.g., nuclear, renewables) to produce electricity and other consumer products. In particular, the facilities and proposed energy system configurations must be assessed with respect to their financial performance when interacting with the electricity market as other commodity markets (e.g., hydrogen, biofuels).

Minimum Requirements:


  • PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or comparable discipline and a minimum of 4 years experience

  • Demonstrated oral and published written communication skills

  • Must be able to work in a culturally diverse environment

  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment

Preferred Requirements:

Desired areas of Expertise:


  • Nuclear plant operations

  • Energy system economics

  • Electricity markets and broader energy markets

  • Artificial intelligence (e.g., machine learning, data mining)

  • Deep understanding of numerical methods, such as optimization, robust optimization, PDE and ODE solutions

  • Statistical analysis

  • Knowledge of the financial management process, including determination of discount rates, risk analysis, creation of complex proforma based analysis

  • Understanding of multi-physics numerical modeling of nuclear reactors and chemical plants

  • Familiarity with uncertainty propagation, verification, and validation methodologies

  • Familiarity with nuclear power plant risk analysis

  • Security clearance is a plus but not required for the position
