DESCRIPTION

The Student Health and Well-being (SHW) cluster of the UC San Diego, which reports through UC San Diego Health System, plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes promotion and the expansion/development of a student health and well-being center, and the transformation of existing departments, under the oversight of the executive director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and SHW Administration.


CAPS delivers campus-based mental health services to over 40,000 registered UCSD undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students. CAPS' multicultural, multidisciplinary, and student-centered staff strives to deliver culturally proficient counseling services, outreach programming, consultation, research, and training opportunities. In collaboration with Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, CAPS services support the academic mission of the University aimed at student success and retention and works toward the maintenance of an inclusive and healthy living and learning environment for individuals to flourish as they pursue their academic and career goals. CAPS is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services and the Post-doctoral Resident Training Program is APPIC affiliated. CAPS is fully committed to self-examination, peer review, and quality improvement through the utilization of data, outcome, and client experience measurements.


UC San Diego Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), is seeking a Sport Psychologist, who will be embedded in UC San Diego Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA), an NCAA Division 1 program. CAPS is seeking to develop the holistic growth of the Scholar-Athletes in their striving towards excellence. This position will coordinate the efforts between CAPS and ICA, including coordination of the Sport Psychology and Outreach Response Team (SPORT) program, a collaborative effort between both departments to foster optimal athletic and academic performance, as well as the mental health and well-being of the Scholar-Athlete. The position also entails the coordination of case management efforts for Scholar-Athletes of concern, outreach to teams and staff, and training of ICA staff and coaches on best practices in fostering optimal performance and well-being of the Scholar-Athlete through assessment, action, and referrals to appropriate resources.


This job involves culturally proficient individual and group clinical mental health services for scholar-athletes, the delivery of preventive and early intervention psychoeducational outreach, as well as engagement with coaches, administrators, sports medicine, and athletic department staff to best support Scholar-Athletes in their strivings for peak performance and flourishing as human beings. The job also involves development and coordination of mental health/wellbeing components of this vital and evolving program through the design, execution, and evaluation of psychoeducational programming for the Athletic Department. Formal Sport Psychology training/certification and experience are required. Also participates in after hours, on-call, and urgent care coverage. Incumbent also provides clinical supervision and training of CAPS Post-doctoral Residents and maintains quality assurance and improvement in compliance standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


  • Doctorate in Clinical or Counseling Psychology and formal Sport Psychology training and/or certification.




  • Current, valid license in California as a psychologist. Out-of-state licensed psychologists have 180 days to complete licensure requirements in the State of California.




  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in the practice of Sports Psychology.




  • Proven ability to conduct culturally proficient and focused individual, conjoint, couples, family counseling and sport psychology and trauma-informed services, as well crisis intervention at an individual and community level




  • Sustained knowledge and experience working with a culturally diverse college populations including ability and expertise with traditionally under-served student groups




  • Advanced skills associated with conducting complex diagnosis, problem-solving and critical-thinking




  • Ability to coordinate care for and education about mental health related issues for the Scholar-Athlete grounded on sport psychology principles and NCAA best practice guidelines.




  • Ability to engage, contribute, interact easily, productively, and functionally as an effective team member in a multi-disciplinary environment with colleagues, supervisors, and members of the campus community to maintain a positive and cooperative working environment and relationships.




  • Ability to work well and energetically in a fast paced service environment with changing priorities, serving a large volume of students effectively on an appointment or walk-in bases. Ability to work independently, demonstrate initiative, and work effectively and collaboratively, delivering consistent performance in a service environment with a student centered approach that requires coordination of care.




  • At all times, demonstrate the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior and attentiveness to others. All staff members are required to uphold the UCSD Principles of Community and to promote a positive and collaborative team environment. Ability to adhere to and practice the mandatory University Core Values & Safety Standards of performance.



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of community resources and ability to make appropriate referrals.

  • Experience working with university Scholar-Athletes and athletic departments.

  • Board Certification in Sports Psychology or Certification as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant is preferred.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must have flexibility to work various hours and locations based on business and clinical needs, including occasional evenings and weekends.

  • This position is subject to work remote during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ability to telecommute for work, if/when needed and operationally feasible, as determined by department.
