City Experiences is seeking a Senior Deckhand for our City Ferry operation in Steilacoom, WA (Pierce County).

About the Opportunity:

The Senior Deckhand supervises and directs all deck activities of the ferry. This position also monitors the waterway, vessel, and passengers to ensure safety during ferry operation. The Senior Deckhand handles mooring lines to dock or undock the vessel and transit locks as well as performs custodial and maintenance tasks, all while ensuring a high level of customer service is presented to all guests

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Remain true to and champion the Company’s Core Values and Code of Conduct.

  • Consider reliability and efficiency with regard to Company operations.

  • Monitor river, vessel, and passengers to ensure safety during ferry operation.

  • Participate in onboard training and routine drills.

  • Train employees new to Deckhand position.

  • Demonstrate practical knowledge of all phases of shipboard safety procedures and knowledge of location and use of all firefighting and safety equipment (i.e. fire extinguishers, life preservers, work vest).

  • Use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Handle and dispose of all chemicals and other types of hazardous or caustic materials in compliance with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) (as required).

  • Report safety related concerns.

  • Respond as assigned to all vessel emergencies, acting as “on scene leader”.

  • Handle mooring lines to dock or undock the vessel and transit locks.

  • Perform lookout duties while underway to include watching for other vessels and monitoring the river for potential unsafe conditions.

  • Assist in boarding and disembarking of passengers.

  • Assist with filling water, bunkering fuel, connecting and disconnecting shore power as directed.

  • Perform cleaning and custodial tasks of the vessels and property, including maintenance and construction tasks as assigned and minor engineering repairs and rounds as directed.

  • Supervise Deckhands during work parties as directed by Master on duty.

  • Seek the highest levels of quality and professionalism.

  • Work to achieve the highest levels of performance and productivity.

  • Seek continuous improvement.

  • Understand the Employee Handbook and adhere to policies.

  • Perform regular mentoring and coaching of Deckhands.

  • Provide feedback to Masters and Port Captain regarding Deckhand performance.

  • Understand and comply with the Safety Management System (SMS).

  • Understand and comply with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Maintain Crew Qualification binder.

  • Collaborate with other HMS personnel to remain attentive to regulatory requirements and alert to regulatory changes.

  • Assist Captain in ensuring compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal safety and environmental regulations.

  • Assist Captain in ensuring vessel is in an inspection-ready condition at all times.

  • Present professional level of customer service and appearance to all clients, both internal and external.

  • Maintain records of passenger counts and account for all tickets.

  • Reporting

  • Complete routine reports as directed.

  • Additional job duties as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications:


  • HS Diploma

  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC card), and/or ability to obtain and maintain

  • Valid First Aid/CPR Certification, and/or ability to obtain and maintain

  • Valid Driver’s License

  • Copy of DD214, if Veteran status

  • Exceptional customer service skills

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills

  • Ability to work in fast-paced, quickly-changing environment

  • Ability to process calculations frequently and continuously

  • Working knowledge of deck equipment

  • Advanced seamanship knowledge, including Safety equipment, line handling, knots & Splices.

  • General knowledge of COLREGS and Inland Rules of the Road. 

  • Basic computer skills with Microsoft Office familiarity

  • Minimum two (2) years’ Deckhand experience onboard vessels

  • Passenger vessel experience

  • Minimum 30 days on board M/V Christine Anderson or M/V Steilacoom II with minimum 30 hours at helm.

  • Proven track record of working successfully in a team environment

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
