Position Summary

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Biology at Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine is recruiting a Statistical Programmer / Data Analyst to support and contribute to multiple research projects within the Gynecologic Disorders and Women's Health Population Science team. This position is designed to be physically located in Grand Rapids, MI. The Statistical Programmer / Data Analyst will join the team of Dr. Stacey Missmer and a vibrant group of well-funded women's health-focused colleagues in our MSU Department as well as active funded longstanding collaborators homed in Boston. Our projects include hospital, community, claims, and diverse population cohort and case-control studies with biomarker, -omic, pathophysiologic, healthcare access, population sampling, and life course dynamic aims.


Dr. Missmer's research primarily focuses on causes, consequences, and discovery of modifiable factors related to reproductive health. Multiple currently funded projects are specific to endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, and infertility, with identification of health disparities and their impact on access to rapid and effective care, consequences and risk variation across the life course, and novel clinically informative sub-phenotypes, as top priorities. The ideal candidate will bring meticulous attention to detail, advanced methodologic expertise, passion for public health, and enthusiasm for team-based scientific discovery. Primary responsibilities will include collaboration with the PI to design statistical analysis plans, prepare and merge datasets, perform statistical analyses primarily using SAS and occasionally using STATA or R, assist researchers with writing and preparing tables/figures for analyses, reports, scientific papers, grants and presentations.

The statistical programmer / data analyst position will work with complex data structures, and the analytic approach demands the attention of a data analyst who is detail-oriented and technically prepared to carry out the following tasks:



  • Overall data linkage and management tasks include: working with multiple sources managed by multiple collaborators to pull appropriate data sets, troubleshoot problems, and identify solutions; linking data from disparate sources; running analyses to test completeness/accuracy of data; establishing project codebooks, protocols, and other products; developing and implementing timely and accurate data transfer and sharing of project data protocols (e.g. technology, agreements, and security mechanisms); maintaining and supporting functionality of project-specific databases.

  • Variable construction and data analysis tasks include: preparing person-level longitudinal data; constructing and deriving valid and reliable variables needed for reporting and analyses; preparing descriptive statistics for multivariable model analysis planning as well as with reports on data accuracy and missing data issues; conducting observational quasi-experimental analyses (e.g., proportional hazards, generalized estimating equation, logistic or linear, and propensity score models). Interest in advancing skills and developing coding for novel or emerging causal-inference methodology ideal.

  • Reporting tasks include: monthly data pulls, cleaning, analyses, enrollment and retention reporting, and written reports for funders; conducting analysis for associative aims.

  • Support and co-author scientific manuscripts, including designing and conducting the statistical analyses, generating publishable results, designing tabular and figure results presentation, interpreting and discussing the findings in both scientific language for publications and scientific society presentations as well as lay language for clinical or community partners and audiences.

  • Data Core management tasks include: development and oversight of orientation and training for data entry and cleaning by other team staff; in collaboration with MSU Biomedical Research Informatics Core development and oversight of databases and REDCap surveys for research projects; function as the primary resource for all study issues related to data entry, coding, quality and management - identifying problems and developing solutions; documentation of all aspects of data management and project-specific statistical analyses

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

  • Three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in research design, statistical methods and knowledge of computer hardware and software;

  • Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master's in Educational Administration, Statistics, Economics or Research Methodology;

  • or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Biostatistics or related discipline, including Epidemiology, Mathematics, or a social science field with a quantitative methods emphasis.

  • Ability to work independently, strong reporting skills for reports and publications, effectively communicate and collaborate in a team environment.

  • Flexible and able to productively interact with a diverse research team including investigators, project managers, coordinators, and research staff to accomplish project goals.

  • Highly organized, with decision-making skills, initiative, and ability to work as part of a growing data management team.

  • Must possess a great deal of integrity to maintain confidentiality of all research data.

  • Proficient in working with large relational data sets including longitudinal time-varying survival, insurance claims, vital record, and electronic medical records data. Ability to link data from multiple data sources. Experience with missing data and multivariable methods required; additional work with multi-omics or machine learning methods a plus.

  • Experience working in collaboration with multiple community and clinical partners and diverse scientists a plus.

  • Expertise or interest in reproductive health a plus.
