Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

In alignment with the mission, programs and initiatives of MSU Extension, delivers research-based information to program participants through various methods and/or provides support and coordination of MSU Extension programs.

Unit Position Summary

Seasonal field technicians will be responsible for:

• Preparing for and conducting rare and invasive species surveys


• Compiling plant species lists


• Providing descriptions of survey areas and current threats


• Capturing GPS data including survey locations of rare species and priority invasive species and survey tracks


• Taking quality photos, documenting rare plant populations using MNFI field forms or other specified monitoring data


• Collecting and labeling voucher specimens of new county records


• Reporting findings at weekly or biweekly intervals


• Transferring data to excel spreadsheets


• Writing summary reports of work accomplished

Desired Qualifications

• Proven ability in establishing and working with a diverse network of constituents and community members across race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities and other differences to assist with program development and outreach.


• Understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and compliance standards.


• Intermediate to expert botanical skills in the identification of Michigan plants species and demonstrated fieldwork experience.


• Strong work ethic, ability to work independently in remote areas, and ability to navigate in the field via map, compass and GPS.


• Reliable transportation and ability to stay in hotels or campgrounds for up to a week at a time.


• Available during late May through the end of September and may be able to accommodate those who are only available for a shorter time frame.
