Job Summary
Azimuth is seeking a highly motivated and talented individual with experience in the field of strategic and critical materials to support the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) in assessing technical solutions that can reduce the reliance on foreign sources of supply in in the U.S. Defense Industrial Base. This position is part of a dynamic, multifunctional team supporting the DLA's Small Business Innovative Research Program (SBIP) responsible for the research, analysis and development of technical and engineering requirements and solutions for strategic materials, recycling, and additive manufacturing under SBIP PM's materials portfolio. We are looking for candidates with a technical background that are well organized, detailed oriented, and driven by their curiosity to solve challenges.

Roles and Responsibilities


  • Serve as high-level technical specialist on technical and engineering requirements for strategic materials.

  • Develop innovative methods, approaches and procedures to identify, evaluate, and recommend materials related solutions to reduce the Defense Industrial Base (DIB) reliance on foreign sources.

  • Provide guidance on the framework, management, and evaluation of SBIP projects conducting research and development and/or integration of next generation strategic materials.

  • Contributes new ideas to design and development of novel materials and processes, and carries out novel materials/systems-related experimentation

  • Collaborates with research team to conduct material experiments and detailed material analytical characterization

  • Provides experienced, high quality analysis in a wide range of characterization techniques, and uses that data and knowledge to drive iterative process trials

  • Systematic coordination of lab resource (material, supply) ordering.

Education, Experience, and Skills


  • Nine (9) years of research and/or engineering work involving strategic/critical materials. Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or technical field.

  • Master's Degree + 7 years' experience or PhD with 4 years' experience is considered equivalent.

  • Materials Engineering Degree preferred and ideally experience in metals, metal alloys, manufacturing, and raw materials. May include: solid-state materials; solid-state physics; materials science; structured materials.

  • Experience with a wide range of analytical techniques for measurement of materials, covering structure, chemistry, and properties

  • Must be well organized, meticulous in documentation, able to communicate effectively in written and oral fashion

  • Well versed in use of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Demonstrated independent research capability through peer reviewed journal articles

  • Material characterization experience preferred

  • Desired: Experience supporting DoD or other Federal Agencies

  • Materials Engineering Degree preferred and ideally experience in metals, metal alloys, manufacturing, and raw materials. May include: solid-state materials; solid-state physics; materials science; structured materials.

  • Off-Site and remote work flexibility. This role works primarily outside of the office and communicates daily through virtual meetings.
