The opportunity

Our USGO Central Region Operations team is evolving to meet the needs of our growing business and we are expanding our presence in West Virginia to support the operation, maintenance, testing and inspection of our natural gas pipelines and associated facilities throughout Elkview and the surrounding area.


We are seeking an Operator B who will engage in the operation and maintenance of a compressor station with reciprocating engines to affect continuous, efficient, and safe operations.

This individual must be a self-starter, capable of working with minimal supervision, who possesses strong analytical, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills.

This position is represented by the United Steelworkers Local 372/628 and the filling of the position is subject to the terms and conditions of the governing collective bargaining agreement.

What you'll do


  • Operate reciprocating prime movers and their related mechanical equipment and automatic controls

  • Control gas pressures and flows, change charts, keep equipment oil and water tanks filled, and oil and clean facilities

  • Periodically inspect the following types of equipment for proper functioning: engines, reciprocating and centrifugal compressors, oil and water, methanol/biocide, vacuum pumps, fans, boilers, condensing equipment, heat exchangers, feed water heaters, air compressors, storage batteries, electric motors and generators, gas scrubbers, dehydration equipment, valves and piping

  • Operate and maintain oil/water separators

  • Operate and inspect tank/dike facilities

  • Make minor repairs to equipment, such as: replacing broken lines and defective mechanical and/or electrical parts, maintaining necessary reports, reporting pressures to gas control, conducting water tests and treatment, adjusting boiler blow-down rates, and taking dew point test of gas

  • Start, load, and remove from the line all prime movers, which requires knowledge of start-up and shutdown procedures and operating limits of station equipment to make operations safe and efficient

  • Carry out instructions for changes in pressures of flows

  • Interpret and/or record readings on instruments, charts, and gauges

  • Ascertain that equipment is functioning properly and attempt to rectify malfunctioning equipment by making operating adjustments

  • If conditions warrant, substitute auxiliary equipment and inform supervisor of needed repair

  • Use indicator to balance engine to see if each cylinder is carrying its share of total power

  • Change oil filter cartridges

  • Change orifice meter charts and read meters

  • Assist with prime mover and compressor overhauls

  • Assist in performing tests and inspections as required by the Manual of Approved Procedures

  • Inspect fire extinguishers

  • Check and calibrate pressure gauges, valve positioners, etc.

  • Change compressor valves

  • Paint equipment and buildings and perform various housekeeping tasks

  • Manage contractors and vendors while on-site

  • Adhere to environmental policies by collecting samples and following appropriate reporting procedures and associated cleanup of any spills

  • Assist in the compilation of shipping manifests, to include completion of reports

  • Coordinate with gas control in operation of facility, consistent with needs and efficiency

  • Assist in planning of work and participate as necessary in safety and/or team meetings and discussion.

  • Complete work orders, enter data into the work management system, create new work orders, etc. in SAP

  • Other tasks as required

Minimum Qualifications


  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Basic mathematical and computer skills

Preferred Qualifications


  • Technical training or experience in the operation of natural gas pipeline systems

  • Knowledge and experience in the use of hand tools and precision measuring instruments

  • Industrial experience in a plant environment

This position requires candidates to


  • Successfully qualify for specific job tasks per DOT and Company operator qualification requirements

  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license and a safe driving record

  • Successfully complete a pre-employment medical screening, to include drug and alcohol testing

  • Be confined-space trained

  • Work an 8-hour rotating shift schedule

  • Be subject to call out 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and work extended days and/or weeks for emergency response purposes

  • Travel to other company locations for temporary assignments, meetings, or training which would involve some overnight stays away from home

  • Be subject to working conditions which include adverse weather and temperatures

  • Pass respiratory fit test and use equipment such as SCBA and other respirators
