Overview

The Sr. Principal Embedded Systems Design Engineer is responsible for the design and development of electronic systems, e.g. single board computers, from architecture definition through PCB and assembly release to production. This individual demonstrates aptitude and hands-on capability to architect and design complex electronics for computing applications, system-level analysis, and firmware. The System Design Engineer applies their understanding of Design-for-Test (DFT) and Design-for-Manufacturability (DFM) principles to new designs ensuring a successful transition from development to production.

Additional duties include evaluation of design requirements, determining design methodologies, helping formulate basis of estimates of effort/cost for potential new business, and participation in continuous improvements to internal design methodologies.

The individual will work as part of a collaborative design-team using prudent design-management techniques including EDA tools, version-control and technical documentation, while participating in project-planning and progress-tracking.


Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Collaborate cross-functionally to establish the direction of future CAES space computing (SC) hardware and software offerings
* Technical leadership for the SC development teams consisting of hardware, software, firmware, mechanical, test, and programs
* Define architectures for future SC products and product derivatives, optimize system for design objectives (performance, power, radiation), including design for manufacturability
* Implementation and simulation for new SC designs, including schematic design and functional simulation
* Complete sign-off system-level analysis: electrical, timing, thermal and mechanical
* Provide technical guidance and leadership for outside services
* Maintain and perform benchmarks for SC products

* Detailed performance sensitivity analysis to identify key performance limiters and invent SC architectural improvements.
* Provide structured feedback for future standard processing integrated circuit offerings
* Create and maintain comprehensive system documentation

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Work with the Division to define product roadmaps, strategies for product derivative, and to provide technical insight into how our products compete in the market
* Continuously learn and stay current with EDA tools, modern design techniques, technology, architectures, and interfaces
* Partner with internal and external customers to develop technical solutions that enable new missions
* Support regular technical/status meetings and prepare and coordinate milestone design-reviews, both internal and customer-facing


Qualifications

MINIMUM
* Bachelor's degree plus 10+ years of experience in high-performance hardware architecture, development, and analysis OR
* Master's degree plus 7+ years of experience in high-performance hardware architecture, development, and analysis.

PREFERRED
* BSEE, BSCE, MSEE, or MSCE.
* Experience in hardware and software product development (analysis, design, development, test, and sustainment).
* Familiarity with various microarchitectures (SPARC V8, RISK-V, ARM).
* PCB design, signal integrity and power integrity analysis at the PCB level.
* Debugging, assembly and testing of integrated circuits and their components.
* Practical design of DC/DC regulators, analog sensors and conditioning circuits for real-time processing, common EIA/TIA/JEDEC signaling standards, and physical design/analysis of PCB traces for high-speed and differential signal-integrity.
* Working knowledge or familiarity with real-time embedded system programming and debug.
* Familiarity with critical-design for Hi-Rel/Mil/Aero, radiation effects, and NASA Class-D and Class-B payloads is a plus.

Salary Range: $138,390-181,637 annually. Applicable pay within the posted range may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, geographical location, job function of the position, education, and experience of the successful candidate.
