Job Description Summary:

The Associate Director, Biology is responsible for the strategic oversight of PTC’s Splicing Platforms within research and drug discovery.  The Associate Director, Biology works within an innovative and collaborative team to plan, execute, and interpret experiments in support of all research activities related to pre-mRNA splicing in the pursuit of therapeutics for human disease.   He/she will work closely with the Vice President, Biology to communicate the impact of experimental results to key stakeholders in the PTC Research and Development organization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Primary duties/responsibilities


  • Contributes to the strategy and direction of successful drug discovery programs in PTC’s splicing platforms.


  • Independently plans, initiates, directs and/or executes scientific research and experiments


  • Establishes goals for all splicing platform activities


  • Interprets and communicates results as part of multi-disciplinary team(s). This includes performing analyses of primary research literature.


  • Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles of pre-mRNA splicing and how to leverage small molecule manipulation of splicing for the treatment of human disease


  • Presents findings internally and externally to cross-functional teams.


  • Participates in the development and writing of patent applications and identifies patentable inventions.


  • Abides by all safety and regulatory guidelines.


  • Maintains a detailed laboratory notebook.


  • Performs other tasks as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED

* Minimum level of education and years of relevant work experience.

  • PhD degree in a scientific discipline, preferably in Biology, with special emphasis on pre-mRNA splicing or other related discipline and a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible and relevant experience in an academic or pharmaceutical, biotechnology or related environment.

* Special knowledge or skills needed and/or licenses or certificates required.


  • Experience designing and conducting cell-based studies of compound activity on pre-mRNA splicing as well as mechanism of action studies.


  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of RNA-biogenesis and turnover with an emphasis on pre-mRNA splicing and its role in eukaryotic gene expression.


  • Works on unusually complex technical problems and provides solutions which are highly innovative.


  • Works under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range goals and objectives. 


  • Assignments are often self-initiated.


  • Exercises independent judgment within defined procedures and practices.


  • Develops advanced technological ideas and guides their development into a final product.


  • Demonstrates technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought within a fast-paced, matrixed, team environment consisting of internal and external team members.


  • Manage and mentor a team of scientists in fast paced matrix environment.


  • May oversee academic collaboration and/or be designated as a subcontractor or co-PI on research grants.


  • Interviews and contributes to the evaluation of candidates.


  • Possesses detailed and expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts.


  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.


  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office preferably MS Excel and MS PowerPoint or similar .


  • Excellent verbal and written communication and skills.


  • Analytical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills.


  • Demonstrates an understanding of the strategic alignment of his/her work with corporate goal(s) and demonstrates the ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.


  • Excellent planning, organization and time management skills including the ability to support and prioritize multiple projects.
