Work Hours/Shift: PRN 4a-1p; could be 5-7 shifts per pay period   You Will Be Responsible For:

  • Follows department and hospital procedures and policies
  • Follows infection control policies including the use of personal protective equipment
  • Follows laboratory department dress code.
  • Follows Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals including handwashing, patient identification and labeling samples in the presence of the patient; follows patient/sample identification protocols to ensure accurate laboratory sample identification.
  • Answers telephone; provides customer support in a professional, courteous and timely manner
  • Interacts with patients and family members in a considerate manner to help reduce anxiety and stress; strives to provide a positive experience with each patient encounter through ICARE standards. 
  • Explains procedures to patients and answers questions in a positive and professional manner; instructs patients in the proper collection of certain non-blood specimens, explaining procedures while providing written instruction and allowing the patient to “teach back” where needed
  • Is able to relate to patients AGE SPECIFICALLY, in a loving, kind, patient and respectful, and non-threatening way
  • Is able to perform 6 to 8 venous collections per hour, in an acceptable manner, from a mixed patient population
  • Notifies patient’s nurse and assistant nurse manager or nurse manager, or technologist of missed collections as soon as possible to avoid confusion and delays
  • Prioritizes laboratory orders appropriately:  stats, timed studies, routines
  • Strives to provide rapid turnaround time for stat orders; sends samples to lab without delay
  • Performs chain of custody drug screen collections
  • Performs finger sticks and heel sticks
  • Properly collects blood cultures without contamination
  • Utilizes the computer to order tests, collect specimens, locates test results, and monitor pending
  • Monitors pending logs (and emergency department grease board in hospital facilities) regularly to provide rapid turnaround time
  • Prepares specimens for send-outs to reference laboratories; uses centrifuge and prepares aliquots using at least 2 patient identifiers for positive patient identification
  • Provides hand-off communication regarding pending lab draws and documents communication
  • Communicates with and responds appropriately to instruction from nurse manager, assistant nurse managers, and nurses.
  • Checks company email daily and responds to work-related requests in a timely manner
  • Uses phone, computer and internet for work-related purposes only
  • Assists other team members in the unit  assigned during slow periods
  • Adheres to scheduled break times; clocks in and out for meal breaks
  • Maintains a clean work area; keeps supplies stocked
  • Works in an organized, efficient, and careful manner
  • Distributes and faxes reports as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
What You Will Need:

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Previous laboratory experience or completion of a phlebotomy training program 

  Job Summary:

The phlebotomist performs venous and capillary blood specimen collection for medical laboratory testing using established safety practices in a skillful and accurate manner.  The phlebotomist instructs patients in the proper collection of certain non-blood specimens, explaining procedures while providing written instruction and allowing the patient to “teach back” where needed.  The phlebotomist exhibits professionalism and actively participates in outstanding customer service, creating an atmosphere of trust and confidence.  A phlebotomist must work well under pressure and be sensitive to the confidentiality of protected health information.  The position requires exercise of judgment under general supervision. The in-patient Phlebotomist shall report to the Clinical Education Manager.
