Job Description:

THIS IS A PART-TIME POSITION WORKING 20 HOURS PER WEEK.

UTHealth is hiring an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner for its Emergency Room Services at Memorial Hermann Hospital located in the Texas Medical Center. Candidate must have an ACNP license or Post masters Acute Care certification. Ideal candidate will have a Current Texas Certification as a Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) with previous clinical experience and psychiatric experience.

Hours: Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm / Part-Time working 20 hours/week

In addition to the Nurse Pracitioner primary respsonibilities, this position:


  • Provides required documentation of services to the Staff Psychiatrist or Health Services Administrator in order to monitor compliance with facility contract.
    Notifies Mental Health Coordinator, Mental Health Director, or Health Services Administrator of requested schedule changes in scheduled coverage.
    Assists in arrangement for coverage of psychiatric services if unavailable for extended period of time.
  • Participates in psychiatric on-call schedule if on-call services, if needed
  • Conducts on-site psychiatric medication review clinics and referral clinics as established by Staff Psychiatrist
    Ensures progress note and treatment plan documentation is in specified format, problem oriented, corresponds to the therapeutic order and is legible.
  • Adheres to the established formulary for therapeutic regimens before using non-formulary procedure.
    Makes pertinent observations and draws logical conclusions, which validate need for non-formulary drug, which is recorded on non-formulary form and submitted to the Corporate Medical Director or Director of Psychiatric Services for approval.
  • Supports standards of psychiatric care through adherence to existing policies and procedures for: admission to the infirmary transfer to emergency room utilization review process for specialty consultant referrals.
  • Reports any doubts or questions regarding the lack of appropriate referrals, nursing or medical intervention necessary for the realization of established patient goals to the Director of Psychiatric Services for disposition.

Position Summary:

Provides advanced nursing care to patients with complex acute, critical, and/or chronic health conditions in a clinic or hospital setting in one or more specialized areas under the direction of a physician.

Position Key Accountabilities:

1. Conducts complex, standardized patient care procedures which require experience and specialized training which would otherwise be performed by a physician, but which do not constitute the practice of medicine.
2. Conducts independent and physician supervised rounding on unit.
3. Performs relevant patient evaluations and assessments, and provides appropriate treatment; including monitoring and ordering medications.
4. Coordinates, directs, and implements the patient's plan of care.
5. Assists in collecting patient histories, screens for co-morbidities, and provides guidance and preventative health care as needed.
6. Performs physical examinations and provides episodic care, or problem-oriented care, under the supervision of a physician.
7. Orders appropriate laboratory, diagnostic and radiographic tests, and interprets results.
8. Monitors the treatment program of the patient to inform the attending physician of pertinent medical information.
9. Facilitates patient education relating to medical processes, medication, nutrition, and health promotion or preventative health care.
10. Assists physicians in formulating therapeutic decisions.
11. Maintains appropriate records, and prepares charts for review and counter signature by physician.
12. Prepares and cares for supplies and equipment.
13. Responds to emergency situations.
14. Performs within the scope of practice prescribed by licensure and certification.
15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Current Texas Licensure as a Registered Nurse

Candidate must have an ACNP license or Post masters Acute Care certification

Ideal candidate will have a Current Texas Certification as a Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)

Minimum Education:

Masters in Nursing as NP or Masters in Nursing with completion of a post-masters Nurse Practitioner Certification Program.

Minimum Experience:

None; previous experience in area of clinical focus preferred.
