Job Description Summary:

The Global Managing Director of Advocacy & the Americas leads policy advocacy for CFA Institute and advances the organizational mission of increasing the effectiveness of capital markets and improving investor outcomes, for the ultimate benefit of society. This role is an external voice for CFA Institute on advocacy matters and will set the strategy on policy decisions. This role is accountable for determining the most appropriate positions for CFA Institute and advising the CEO of CFA Institute and the Managing Director of Research, Advocacy, and Standards on any reputational or other risks that could arise from such positions. The successful applicant for this role must have a strong understanding of the investment management industry and the functioning of capital markets. This role must be able to identify ethical challenges and conflicts of interest and have the fortitude to advocate for ways to shape the investment management profession, even when consensus is not possible.

The role includes extensive interaction with stakeholders including CFA Institute members, other investment practitioners, regulators, reporters, and other influencers in the marketplace. In addition, the Global Managing Director of Advocacy & the Americas will manage a team of regional advocacy leaders and be the leader of the Americas regional advocacy team.

The Global Managing Director of Advocacy & the Americas is headquartered in NYC, DC or Charlottesville, VA and will report to the Managing Director, Research, Advocacy & Standards.

Job Description:

The Global Managing Director of Advocacy & the Americas will have the opportunity to:


  • Increase the impact and influence of the advocacy conducted by CFA Institute and represent CFA Institute in public forums and committees, including engagement with the media, at events, and with policymakers and opinion formers

  • Build relationships with key investment industry leaders and influencers, including leaders of financial and investment institutions, special interest groups, regulators, standard setters, board members of standard setters, the legal community, senior politicians, and business and civil society leaders

  • Champion the organization's advocacy efforts among key stakeholders including CFA Institute members and candidates, other investment professionals, CFA Institute society Leaders, and employers

  • Identify talent for advisory roles and to build the team; attract and retain influencers

  • Accountable for the quality of advocacy outputs, ensuring an independent and unbiased approach that is consistent with the organization's mission and priorities

  • Responsible for measuring the long-term and short-term impact and effectiveness of advocacy efforts

  • Support the Heads of Advocacy in EMEA and APAC, and lead the Americas team

  • Work closely with the Chief Economist to align research with policy advocacy needs, and work with the Senior Head of Codes and Standards to analyze when a new standard or enhancement may be needed

  • Brief other Managing Directors and spokespeople on positions to ensure consistency in messaging, and collaborate with senior leaders throughout the organization to ensure internal and external consistency to "walk the talk"

  • Maintain current awareness of policy matters impacting the capital markets to provide guidance on priority themes

The experiences required for the role are:


  • Extensive (15+ years) relevant business and leadership experience in the investment management and/or broader financial services industry, including strategic visioning and planning and managing multiple constituencies

  • 15+ years leadership and management experience leading global, complex and matrixed teams required

  • Advanced degree required

  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation preferred

  • Excellent consulting, problem solving, and analytical skills, including consideration of varied perspectives and ability to influence

  • Must have a track record of successfully achieving goals in addition to the ability to think and act on behalf of whole organization

  • Global cultural orientation and working experience, with an awareness of regional and local needs alongside global priorities

  • Large-scale global operations and business development experience, including talent management and assessment and budget responsibility
