Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Project Engineering: Leads technical teams and coordinates engineering activities for design, development, and implementation of new products and manufacturing processes. Supports program management and operations personnel with technical guidance on assigned projects. Ensures that design concepts comply with customer's specifications and are manufacturable. Supports acceptance testing, qualification testing, and troubleshooting efforts on assigned programs. Participates in configuration control (CCD), change control (ECO, NOR, RCN), and MRB activities to support assigned programs. Adheres to program financial goals and provides financial estimates and status updates to program management.
Business Development: Supports technical meetings with customers and writes technical proposals for development of new business. Assists the estimation group in evaluating technical requirements, identifying exceptions, and preparing cost estimates for customer quotes.
Education & Experience
Minimum Bachelor's Degree in optical, mechanical, electrical, or manufacturing engineering, optical-physics, or a related discipline
Minimum 5 years of related experience in a professional role with Bachelor's degree; or equivalent experience
3+ years with Master's or higher degree
An understanding of optical and mechanical manufacturing and test processes and the ability to apply engineering theories and concepts are essential
Skills
Strong verbal and written technical communication skills.
Computer skills in word processing and spreadsheet software, including MS Word, Excel, Access, some CAD (Solidworks preferred) and some FEA (Cosmos preferred), to support requirements for technical reports and analytical studies.
Must understand production flow and be capable of logically developing planning within this flow that correctly and efficiently builds product.
Must be capable of reading blueprints.
Experience in machining and conventional optical fabrication technologies (grinding, polishing, coating, testing) is desired.
Experience in process design, development and project planning is desired.
Ability to lead technical program presentations internally and for customers.
Strong analytical, fault isolation, and problem solving skills. DOE and SOE experience strongly desired.
Strong organizational skills and attention to details required.
Experience in preparing and maintaining drawings, procedures, process routers and Bills of Materials with full documentation and configuration control.

Opto-mechanical assembly techniques
Optical alignment and optical alignment tools and methods
Crystalline, glass, and polymer materials for refractive systems in the IR, SWIR, NIR, Visible, and UV portions of the spectrum
Anti-Reflective (AR), High-Reflective (HR), and filter optical coatings
Metals, plating, conversion film, and coating materials for mechanical structures or reflective optical system substrates
Materials and mounting methods for opto-mechanical systems; preparation and use of primers, one and two part adhesives, and elastomers
Optical element cleaning, handling, and packaging
Clean room protocols and processes
Mentoring other engineers and technicians in alignment methods, error budgets, error analysis, and tools
Conducting trade studies and engineering analyses of optical alignment and tests for optical instruments
Knowledge of thermal, mechanical, vibration, and shock effects on optical systems
Mechanical metrology instruments and techniques and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
Knowledge of optical and mechanical materials and fabrication processes
Experience using CAD software; SOLIDWORKS experience preferred
Optical design and analysis; hands-on experience with Zemax, CODE V, OSLO, etc. is a plus
Computer programming
Vendor/supplier sub-contract management including optics, mechanics, tooling fabrication, and optical coatings
Analysis, advising, and reporting on the feasibility of new projects
Optical component or system inspection per typical standards, e.g. MIL-PRF-13830B or ISO 10110, including cosmetic or functional Scratch-Dig, particle or residue contamination, reflectance, transmittance, index of refraction, surface roughness, BRDF, etc.
Optical component or system test and metrology instruments, techniques, and performance testing, e.g. Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), Transmitted Wavefront Error, Surface Figure, focal length, encircled or ensquared energy, transmission, relative illumination, veiling glare, etc.
