About Us

The Plant Breeding & Genetics Section of Cornell's School of Integrative Plant Science (SIPS) is dedicated to the genetic improvement of crop plants for the benefit of society through the development of novel breeding methodologies, the discovery and deployment of economically important genes as genetic stocks, germplasm, and varieties, and the training of a new generation of plant breeders.

As plant breeders for Cornell University, our vision is to be world leaders in innovative plant breeding research, teaching, and extension. Our mission is accomplished through diverse research, teaching, and extension activities ranging from the molecular study of crop plant genomes to development of superior crop varieties. Our scientists collaborate with others to integrate the knowledge, information, and expertise from a range of disciplines to produce new knowledge and unique germplasm. Students in the Field of Plant Breeding represent diverse interests and come from a wide range of cultural, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.

What You Will Do

As the Technician, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:


  • Provide technical support for the Cereals project.


  • Responsibilities are participation in all activities related to breeding and genetics.


  • Assist in preparing and packaging seed for field trials and analysis


  • Plant, harvest and maintain field trial plots locally and at regional test sites


  • Electronic collection of field data


  • Field duties include seed preparation, planting, data collection, harvesting and processing of field trials.


This position requires operating the tractor, planter and harvest combines. There is some travel within NYS for regional trials. Application of fertilizer and pesticides is required, as is the operation and routine maintenance of farm equipment. Knowledge of farm equipment necessary. Good greenhouse and basic laboratory skills are a plus.

What We Need

You will need to be motivated and an enthusiastic learner, capable of exercising some degree of independence in research. Be personable, motivated and enthusiastic about working in a group environment as well as independently. Additionally you will need:


  • Formal training beyond a HS Diploma of 1 to 2 years.


  • Must possess excellent organizational and communication skills.


  • Ability to lift 20-50 pounds.


  • Must be punctual, reliable and able to occasionally work irregular hours and travel to field sites.


  • Working knowledge with basic computer programs such as MS Word, Excel, and e-mail.


  • Experience in collection of data and comfortable with basic database programs.


  • Visual concentration, attention to detail and manual dexterity are required.


  • Must hold and maintain a valid NYS driver's license.


  • Willingness to get Cornell DOT certification to drive fleet truck and project trailer to and from field sites.


  • Complete the training to become a tractor and forklift operator and maintain the certification.

There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, including:


  • Associates or Bachelor's Degree in related field.


  • Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols.


  • Pesticide applicators license or willingness to obtain one a plus.


  • Experience in a field-based research program or other agricultural field.


  • Experience training or supervising students in a research setting.


  • Experience working with diverse groups of people and fostering an environment of inclusion.
