Lynker Technologies, LLC is seeking to hire a part-time Research Coordination Assistant to support the Research Coordinator with NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary (HIHWNMS). Work will be conducted at the Kihei, HI site. This position is anticipated to begin January 2022 and extend for 4-6 months. The position will be part-time at 15-20/hours a week.

The Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS), established in 1972 by the National Marine Sanctuaries Act (NMSA) and administered by NOAA's National Ocean Service, protects a network of special marine and freshwater areas. The goal of the NMSA is to set aside and manage areas for resource protection, research, enhanced public education, and compatible public and private uses. Management activities for each site are detailed in site-specific management plans which outline regulatory goals, describe boundaries, identify staffing and budget needs, and set priorities and performance measures for resource protection, research, and education programs.

ONMS oversees thirteen National Marine Sanctuaries (NMS) and one National Monument. The Pacific Island Region (PIR) of ONMS manages three NMS sites: the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument (PMNM), Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary (HIHWNMS), and the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa (NMSAS).

The Research Coordination Assistant will assist the HIHWNMS Research Coordinator at the Kihei, HI, site and provide regional support for acoustic activities in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument (PMNM) and National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa (NMSAS).

The Research Coordination Assistant duties include:

  • Perform tasks related to the SanctSound project and other Pacific Islands Region (PIR) acoustic research activities, such as processing, analyzing and managing biological data obtained from various projects including acoustic monitoring, tagging efforts, field surveys and other projects employing a variety of methods.
  • Assist with the preparation and deployment of SanctSound and PIR field equipment and with other logistical needs.
  • Participate in field operations related to the SanctSound project and other PIR acoustic monitoring activities on vessel missions as crew.
  • Contribute to the preparation of data product deliverables for the SanctSound project and other PIR acoustic monitoring activities, prepare reports, presentations and manuscripts as directed.
  • Assist with the training of interns and students in consultation with the Research Coordinator.
  • Participate in the assembly, testing, shipping and/or deployment of scientific instruments.
  • Participate in, coordinate and/or execute field operations and/or biological surveys, including multi-day research expeditions, related to the PIR's science priorities.
  • Manage databases of scientific data, data products, and other information.
  • Give presentations about the SanctSound project, other PIR acoustic monitoring activities and HIHWNMS scientific activities to the public, stakeholders and technical audiences.
. Requirements:

Minimum required qualifications include:

  • BA or BS in natural sciences or a related field.
  • Additional minimum of three years of experience with processing, analyzing and reporting marine bioacoustics data.
  • Proficiency with software used to analyze bioacoustics data, including Matlab, R, Audition and/or Raven Pro.
  • Proficiency with standard Microsoft Office programs including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with the deployment and recovery of marine acoustic instrumentation as well as biological field surveys.
  • An attention to detail is required, as well as a demonstrated commitment to scientific research, including the ability to engage in extended periods of data processing/analysis.
  • Familiarity with the operation of moored passive acoustic recorders, such as Ecological Acoustic Recorders, SoundTraps, MicroMARS, Loggerhead DSGs, etc.
  • A background in marine mammal acoustics, marine mammal biology, data management, and/or marine fieldwork.
  • Experience with the operation of small vessels and experience with surveys on oceanographic research vessels.
