Job Description and Responsibilities:

Coherent is a world leader in lasers, optics, and sensors for scientific, precision manufacturing, life sciences, and semiconductor manufacturing.

We are looking for a New Product Introduction (NPI) Engineer to support the NPI process for Coherent's HOPS (High Power Optically Pumped Semiconductor) and DPSS (Diode Pumped Solid State Laser) business units. This position supports multiple project managers in developing and releasing to the market a wide variety of different product platforms for the latest generation of Optically Pumped Semiconductor Lasers as well as Coherent's Diode Pumped Q-Switched Lasers and Femtosecond Yb Lasers. The successful candidate will be continually challenged in developing highly competitive industrial products working with the latest solid state laser technologies. This position provides essential support in the NPI process and will be immediately impactful with multiple avenues for growth.

This position focuses on the transition through the prototype and pilot run NPI phases through to the release to manufacturing. Primary responsibilities will include material procurement, material management, pilot run inventory management, product cost tracking, BoM structure and management, ECO initiation, test validation, and implementation. The role should expand to become a site-wide resource for ECO implementation and management.

Job Responsibilities:


  • Collaborate with the cross-functional team for the introduction of new products

  • Write and execute IQOQ/DQ and PQ protocols

  • Able to work and collaborate closely with multi disciplinary teams to maintain test fixtures and product BOMs

  • Release parts, build and maintain Bill of Materials with a focus on leveraging approved suppliers, costs, and quality

  • Maintain "best in class" documentation including mechanical BOM and part number information control

  • Act as a point of contact with Production and R&D on the transfer of new products to manufacturing

  • Participate in design reviews

  • Must be self-motivated with the ability to meet deadlines

  • Act as a point of contact with Production and R&D on the transfer of new products to manufacturing

Technical Skills:


  • Production release documentation such as BOMs, ECOs, work instructions, and data collection and SPC control

  • Hands-on experience in the production environment

  • Ability to work with suppliers and ensure timeline and quality achievement

  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills and experience

  • Strong mentorship skills




Education and Work Experience:

Required Background and Education:


  • B.S. in Mechanical, Optical or Industrial Engineering (or equivalent experience)

  • 5+ years of related experience

Technical experience in the following areas:


  • Experience in a manufacturing environment, ideally including the transfer from design engineering into manufacturing in a high-tech environment


    • Agile (PDM tool) or equivalent

    • Oracle

    • Knowledge and experience in New Product Introduction Process

    • Understanding of basic optical systems requirements

    • Knowledge of optics, electronics, and opto-mechanics


      • Solidworks or other CAD package skills

      • An understanding of LEAN and six sigma methodologies

      • Enthusiasm to drive positive change

      • Willingness to take responsibility for improvement action

      • Initiative to seek innovative solutions to problems

      • Excellent communication and people skills
