Coherent is a world leader of lasers, optics, and sensors for scientific, precision manufacturing, life sciences, and semiconductor manufacturing.
We are seeking an experienced Development Engineer to design Automated Test and Assembly Stations for Laser manufacturing. This position resides in the NPI Engineering Group within the Optically Pumped Semiconductor business unit. The ideal candidate will be a multi-disciplinarian, able to create the systems and stations needed to build lasers within a manufacturing environment. In terms of station bring-up, we are searching for someone who can define tooling Optics/Opto-Mechanics, Test Equipment & Station Layout. An important aspect of this position will be the ability to tie everything together on the station by developing modular Software code. The prospective candidate should have the ability to:
Define layout, then develop and qualify stations that incorporate optics, opto-mechanics and capital test equipment
Develop automation processes to improve consistency and reduce touch-time in manufacturing
Develop and maintain software to automate station functions including data acquisition, analysis and storage
Develop manufacturing data dashboards to drive continuous improvement
Support and improve legacy software tools and applications
Translate build & test requirements into final purchasing decisions for tooling & capital equipment
Prepare, release and maintain station BOMs within a Product Lifecycle Management system
Qualify stations using Gage R&R tools
Interface with other engineering groups in 'pulling' new products into manufacturing, with the focus of having stations at the appropriate level of readiness per NPI phase gates
Develop and implement machine vision based systems for image processing/analysis
Mentor and train highly skilled technicians
Tactfully negotiate and manage conflict in a pool of diverse opinions
Aid in defining and achieving project milestones
Education and Work Experience:
Minimum of BS in Physics, Mechanical, Electrical or Optical Engineering. MS highly desirable.
Demonstrated 7+ years of experience as an Automation, Test or Process Development Engineer in a high-technology manufacturing environment
Significant experience in LabVIEW is required, including understanding of advanced programing concepts like State-Machines, Data-flow driven architectures, Event triggers, Notifiers, Queued Message & Error handling.
Python, C#/C/C++ nice to have
Fluent understanding of specifications as it pertains to catalog opto-mechanics, optics, sensors and actuators (Thorlabs, Newport, Edmund, etc)
Experience with tolerance analysis for mounting of optics in beam delivery applications
Basic theoretical understanding of Optics, such as calculation of focal length, field-of-view, resolution, depth-of-field, etc
Demonstrated experience in building and delivering 'production-ready' Test/Assembly stations to manufacturing
Working knowledge of SQL based database systems and the ability to generate SQL statements for read/write operations within application level programs
Motion control as applied to automated test and assembly. Experience with motorized actuators and robotics desirable
Implementing camera-lens based vision applications for image acquisition and analysis
Understanding of image processing concepts like color plane extraction, morphology (erosion, dilation), pattern-matching,
Savvy with measurement equipment like optical spectrum analyzers, optical power meters, DAQ cards, oscilloscopes, function generators, beam profilers (spatial/temporal), etc.
Experience with writing code to communicate with instruments for data extraction using various communication protocols
Demonstrated leadership in decision making with ambiguous or limited data
Excellent oral and written communication skills: able to communicate and present findings to a wide range of audience, from technicians to senior management
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Project management experience is desirable as it pertains to station bring-up
Must work well in teams, but be comfortable in holding own ground and negotiating when deemed necessary
