The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

As a(n) Speech Scientist, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

• Research to improve our Speech Understanding technologies for human-computer and doctor-patient conversational speech


• Drawing inspiration from the latest speech and ML research conferences, as well as the real-world challenges of modern medicine.


• Leveraging our large transcribed speech corpora and variety of sources, from desktop to mobile to ambient.


• Interacting with product teams to understand what challenges doctors face and how to improve our technology with greater intelligence, allowing doctors to put their patients first.

Your Skills and Expertise 

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

• Master’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution


• Experience with machine learning and statistics


• Experience developing new deep learning models in an ML toolkit (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Kaldi, …)


• Scripting Experience

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

• PhD in Computer Science or related field


• Prior R&D experience with machine learning technologies for speech, including speech recognition, speaker identification, conversation diarization, speech separation and enhancement.


• Prior R&D experience working with far-field speech, including multi-microphone arrays.


• Good programming skills in java and/or C++


• Experience with both Linux and Windows

Travel: May include up to 5% days of domestic travel, plus international conferences

Relocation Assistance: May be authorized

Location: Pittsburgh, PA / Boston, MA / Remote
