Job Description:

Manage all aspects of the Optical & Mechanical Engineering Group, and others reports as assigned. Responsibilities include resource management, performance management, personnel development, financial management, recruiting and selection, technology development and planning. Provide technical leadership and mentoring, and as needed, perform product and technology development. Assists with the planning and execution of product development, product support, technology development, and improvement projects to meet corporate schedule and budget objectives.

Professional Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor or Master of Science in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related engineering discipline.

Experience

  • Minimum ten (10) years of experience in design and systems development.

  • Minimum five (5) years managing engineering projects and/or leading development teams.


General

  • Demonstrated high level of knowledge and expertise in the technical area to be managed.

  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and lead people, especially engineering teams in new product development, from ideation to manufacturing.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively with engineers and non-engineers alike, resolving issues, developing strategies and executing plans effectively.

  • Demonstrated ability to make sound and timely decisions-by including appropriate people and gathering appropriate information.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders of all levels.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and direct teams, prioritize work for the greatest good to LI-COR and its customers, and manage resources.

  • Demonstrated mature judgment, and a solid understanding of manufacturing and marketing requirements.

  • Motivated self-starter, who enjoys challenges. High energy and achievement.

  • High creativity, insight, curiosity and demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, analytical and interpersonal skills.

Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all management aspects of the Optical & Mechanical Engineering Group and others as assigned.

  • Resource Management

    • Works in collaboration with Project Managers, Product Managers, R&D Managers, and other stakeholders to:

      • Establish prioritization and scope of work for new product development, product support, research activities, and department or company improvement projects.

      • Assign people to projects. Monitors their progress, makes adjustments as needed.



    • Proactively identifies external resources when needed, facilitates contractual relationships, and integrates external resources into development teams.



  • Performance Management and Personnel Development

    • Responsible for the planning and execution of goal setting, performance reviews, salary reviews, the development of promotion plans, and the creation of and updates to job descriptions and JTL's.

    • Responsible to ensure new employees and interns are properly trained for their work. Ensure the Job Training Lists are completed in a timely manner. Provide appropriate training for the Job Training List.

    • Assists in the planning and implementation of strength-based management methods to facilitate employee growth and development.

    • Assists in the establishment and maintenance of a proactive process for communicating goals and soliciting feedback.

    • Evaluate, plan and develop strategies to provide the technical expertise and coverage needed for LI-COR's existing and emerging product development demands.



  • Financial Management and Business Outcomes

    • Works in synergy with other departments to meet sales and profit goals.

    • Assists in the development of insight into customer requirements and markets in order to provide suggestions for product additions and applications to expand current markets and develop new markets.

    • Assists in the preparation and management of the engineering budget for the Mechanical Group, including development costs, staff planning and capital equipment purchases.



  • Recruiting and Selection

    • Assists in the planning and execution of employee recruitment and selection strategies.

    • Attend career fairs. Organize and conduct interviews and lead the evaluation and selection of prospective employees, contractors, and interns.

    • For new employees, coordinate with others at LI-COR to identify, plan, procure, and implement what is needed to ensure a smooth and effective transition into LI-COR.



  • Product Development, Technology Development, and Technical Leadership

    • Assists in the research, planning and development of emerging technologies and provide direction for future development.

    • Serve as a technical consultant to the development teams and take an active role in mentoring, developing, and training engineers.

    • As needed, perform or manage product development and technology development.



  • Facilities Management
    • Responsible for ensuring appropriate workspace, equipment and facilities for those in their group.


  • ISO Goals and Documentation

    • Establish, track and complete ISO Department Goals appropriate for the group

    • As needed, create, review, modify, and update ISO procedures, forms, and work instructions relevant to the group.
