Under supervision of the Principal Investigator and senior research personnel, the Lab Assistant in the Dept of Medical Genetics and Molecular Biochemistry provides general laboratory operations support. After initial training, this will include performing experiments and collecting data, as well as general laboratory maintenance. Our laboratory performs no experiments using vertebrate animals, only cells maintained in culture conditions. The Lab Assistant position is for a 12-month period with the possibility of an extension based upon the Principal Investigator's available funding.

Responsibilities include: maintaining cultures of cell lines; preparing standard solutions and reagents; assisting with protein purification procedures; summarizing and presenting experimental results at weekly lab meetings; maintaining inventory of laboratory equipment and supplies. After training, duties would include performing electrophysiological experiments using cultured cells. May maintain, assemble, and adjust laboratory equipment.

May assist with the supervision of student workers, provide instruction on the use of equipment and research techniques and provide assistance in the performance of assigned laboratory exercises. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience: At least one year of laboratory experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills and Abilities:

*Ability to keep accurate experimental and inventory records

*Demonstrated ability to use standard software including MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint.

*Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to follow explicit instructions.

*Must have excellent interpersonal skills, along with the ability to interact with a diverse population of students, faculty and staff.

Preferred:

*Bachelor's degree with coursework in biology or chemistry

*Basic working knowledge of nerve and muscle physiology is preferred.
