Performs medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.

The Laboratory Customer Service Representative is primarily responsible for customer service needs of laboratory clients. Functions performed include but are not limited to answering telephone inquiries that are received in the Laboratory call center, faxing results, double-checking requisitions, adding on tests and contacting ordering provider/clients whenever a problem occurs. Calls are received from outreach clients, nurses, providers and patients. In addition, specialized knowledge of laboratory testing and specimen handling are required.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:


  1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

  2. *Under the supervision of a CLIA-designated General Supervisor (Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist), performs laboratory testing according to laboratory standards, policies and procedures in a timely thorough manner.

  3. *Analyzes test results and enters data into the computer using laboratory standards, policies, and procedures.

  4. *Performs and analyzes quality control measures to ensure accurate clinical data.

  5. *Maintains competency and proficiency on all laboratory instrumentation and procedures; performs and documents preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment, troubleshooting problems as necessary.

  6. *Communicates with coworkers, clients and leadership by transmitting appropriate ideas, information and opinions clearly and concisely; maintains employee, patient, client and corporate confidentiality.

  7. *Performs general housekeeping tasks to maintain safe work environment; maintains adequate supplies in the work area.

  8. Assists in training new employees and students.

  9. Works collaboratively with all laboratory staff to ensure completion of testing and communication of necessary information to assist testing completion.

  10. Completes all mandatory safety, infection control, laboratory and Medical Center training and follows guidelines per written protocols.

  11. Assists with process and quality improvement within laboratory.

  12. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

  13. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.

  14. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


  1. Knowledge of clinical laboratory test procedures, standards and equipment.

  2. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

  3. Skill in the use and preventative maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment.

  4. Ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply such concepts to practical situations.

  5. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  6. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

  7. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.

  9. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills.

  10. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

  11. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

  12. Ability to work as a team member.

  13. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related laboratory science from a two-year accredited college or CLIA- approved Military MLT program required. American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification as an MLT (ASCP) or equivalency preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(DOT) - Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must be able to distinguish and discriminate between colors.
