A Day in the Life

The R&D Technician II will support our Sensor and Infusion R&D organization. This individual will be responsible for working with Sensor and Infusion R&D Engineers to test electrochemical sensors for R&D applications. The position is responsible for enabling business critical functions to develop and release products by innovating on, developing, improving, and validating glucose sensor test systems. As technology advances and new products are created that are smaller, last longer, can process more data, etc. test systems must evolve at the rate of product development. The candidate will be responsible for supporting the overall in-vitro test system strategy for existing and new products.


  • Own the installation, operation, and maintenance of buffer-based fluid test systems in the department under minimum supervision.
  • Execute formal test protocols related to scientific work and document test results.
  • Communicate with all levels of staff regarding issues that may come up with procedures and work towards continuous improvement of test systems.
  • Download and process sensor testing data, generate and distribute plots to sensor investigators.
  • Maintain a list of test equipment and their calibration dates and manage the inventory to make sure all the equipment gets calibrated before due date.
  • Support the research, development, and characterization of sensor platforms by assembling and/or testing prototype parts.
  • Execute failure analysis to identify root causes for part failures observed in prototype sensor products.
  • Manage and prepare supplies as needed to support in vitro test system operation.
  • Ensure all product, material, parts, and documentation comply with company specifications and quality standards.
  • Foster a good working relationship with peers, functional managers and engineering staff.
  • Handle production materials and chemicals per operating procedures.

Must Have - Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant Technician, Manufacturing and/or R&D experience, and may require vocational or technical education or certification in addition to prior work experience.

Nice to Have

  • Able to be on-call on weekends and be on-site as needed on short notice.
  • Able to move containers / gas tanks weighing up to 25lbs
  • Associate degree in a technical program or other technical training/certification.
  • 2+ years' experience in an R&D / Quality / Manufacturing environment (preferably medical manufacturing)
  • Previous medical device experience
  • Experience with GMP and GDP requirements
  • Knowledge of the English and Metric measuring systems with the ability to perform mathematical conversions to each.
  • Self-starter, motivated individual requiring minimum supervision to complete assigned tasks.
  • Proficient in the use of standard laboratory equipment (microscope, balance, hot plate).
  • Previous experience working in a chemistry (wet) lab environment.
  • Previous experience documenting test results in a lab notebook.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Experience with medical device or pharmaceutical development and manufacturing
  • Previous experience with operation of pressurized flow-based fluid test systems
  • Previous experience with failure analysis
  • Previous experience with handling biohazard substance for testing and proper disposal.
  • Previous experience with Mainsaver software
  • Experience managing material inventory in the lab for testing and ensuring timely purchase based on usage
  • Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively present information to other employees.
  • Hands on experience searching, extracting and routing documents on Agile PLM system
  • Previous experience with electrochemical sensor testing
  • Previous experience preparing buffer solutions
  • Knowledge on Microsoft Office Suite and Minitab .
  • Basic Background in Statistical Process Control and statistical analysis.
  • Ability to work well on teams.
  • An understanding of Serviceability, design, and manufacturing of mechanical components and assemblies.
