Purpose

This position provides mechanical engineering technical direction to the Product Sustainment Group and supported functions.

Essential Functions

Planning/Organizing


  • Responsible for the mechanical sufficiency and design viability of the existing products at Ward Leonard.
  • Interprets military and industrial specifications relevant to the existing product lines, relating to product specification, shock and vibration requirements, and any additional requirements.
  • Provides technical direction of a mechanical engineering nature to ensure an orderly/timely flow of work on projects, RFQs, and contracted orders handled or supported by the Sustainment Group.

    • Provides mechanical/electrical engineering support relating to the design and manufacture of both AC / DC motors. Guides conduct and analysis of airborne and structureborne testing of motors and generators used on Naval vessels.
    • Provides mechanical support relating to the design and manufacture of sheet metal enclosures.
    • Interprets customer specifications to ensure that equipment supplied meets all requirements.

  • Supports shop floor with issues relating to build and test, working in conjunction with Manufacturing Engineering. Finds solutions to correct assembly and performance problems.
  • Has in-depth knowledge of CAD and how it can enhance Rotating Machinery design, and sheet metal panels and enclosures.

Customer/Vendor Work Relationships

Must effectively interface with all internal company departments.

Continuous Improvement/Productivity


  • May represent Engineering Department on Continuous Improvement Task Teams.
  • Works on improving engineering and CAD procedures and methods to reduce time but still ensure that all components and finished product drawings and documents meet the required specifications.

Accountability

Reports to Sustainment Engineering Manager. Ensures all work is done in accordance with Customer specifications and Company Policy. Keeps manager aware of all progress and problems.

Physical Requirements

Job requires sitting at a desk, performing CAD for most of the day, doing normal office work, including phone communications and using a computer. Also involves standing and walking in an office, lab environment and a manufacturing facility.

Environmental / Safety / Time Allocation


  • Spends approximately 80% of time working at a desk in a normal office environment.
  • Spends approximately 75% of time working on rotating machines products, and 25% of the time on existing controls products.
  • Spends about 20% of time on work away from desk, including going out into shop and lab. Must wear eye protection and any other required personal protective equipment while on the shop floor.

Training / Cross Training / Progression

  • Attends all scheduled internal training sessions.
  • Assists in the training of new Mechanical Designers or Design Engineers to promote orderly progression.
  • Ability to aid in quoting functions to provide the Sales team with engineering estimates to complete work on existing designs.

Training

Requirements for this position are to also be engaged in: 5S, Continuous Improvement, On-Time Delivery, Routine Total Preventative Maintenance and the submission of Improvement Ideas.

Education / Experience


  • Must be a U.S. citizen

  • Requires solid understanding of drafting techniques and engineering terminology.
  • Proven mechanical aptitude.
  • Proven CAD expertise, ideally with SolidWorks and complex electrical or electromechanical equipment.
  • Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • BSME or MSEE Degree with 3 - 4 years of rotating machinery experience.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal ability.
  • Highly motivated individual secure in minimal-supervision environment.
