Responsibilities

Lathe Technicians are responsible for the safety of themselves and the employees working with and around the technician at all times :

• Constant monitoring of the plant for hazard recognition is necessary, both safety or environmental.


• Monitoring lockout procedures and practices must be done routinely.


• Fork-lift traffic and pedestrian walkways need to be constantly monitored for safety of all employees


• Conducting pre-task assessments before non-routine tasks must be done (All-in-One Cards).


• Immediate response to any and all identified unsafe situations that may lead to injury for any employees


• Ensure every employee demonstrates proper working procedure in accordance to the Lathe and Lathe Area Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

Monitoring shift product quality, efficiency and performance at each Lathe :

• Properly maintains the lathes in a precision that is always within the manufacturing specs including but not limited to all hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical components (Listed Below in "Continual Monitoring).


• Ensure all lathes are producing a top quality product from the lathes to the dryers.




• Identifies and documents all quality issues and makes corrective action immediately.


• Reference 'Veneer Quality Monitoring' SOP to verify all green veneer follows all proper specs.




• Monitor the blocks temperature to ensure temperatures are consistent and above the minimum control limit throughout the shift.


• Communication procedure is listed below.


• Ensure all lathes are operating at optimal performance and production in accordance with machine center Maximum Bottleneck Speed (MBS) at the appropriate crewing levels.


• Must be proactive in utilizing Control Factor Analysis (CFA) to identify root cause of all issues through the Production Breakdown Report (PBR).


• Notify the Supervisor and/or Superintendent if there was a symptom fix or follow up work required to address root cause. A work order must be completed in all cases.


• Monitor data for each lathe throughout the shift and verify its accuracy.

The Lathe Technician will lead conduct centering checks each shift they are present for, at least 2 blocks per lathe a shift following the criteria below. At least once a week there must be a five (5) block per lathe test that will be completed on Day Shift :

• Pull out the block at 10" and assure that it is a true cylinder.


• Traverse it from the lathe spindles to the centering vees.


• Reintroduce block to the lathe in automatic with the trash gate closed.


• Document the outcome.




• Supervisor and/or Lathe Tech must be present for all tests.


• Anything over 3 strips out of center must be shut down and corrected.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications : Two or more years' manufacturing experience and/or technical college.

Preferred Qualifications : Previous plywood manufacturing experience.
