GENERAL SUMMARY / OVERVIEW STATEMENT



The MGH Center for Community Health Improvement (CCHI) collaborates with underserved communities to improve health and carries out the fourth leg of the hospital's mission which is to "improve the health and well-being of the diverse communities we serve." Charlestown is among the communities where MGH has a deep and enduring commitment by providing health care at MGH Charlestown HealthCare Center and through community health improvement via community coalitions, namely The Charlestown Coalition.


MGH is the "backbone" organization to this coalition. Comprised of key community stakeholders, MGH provides coalition staff, evidence-based practices for coalitions to follow, training and technical assistance, grant-writing, evaluation and more. The Charlestown Coalition, supported by MGH CCHI, promotes a healthier community through the development and implementation of policy, systems and environmental changes for the prevention of substance use disorders and other social and structural determinants of health and their effects on residents of Charlestown, Massachusetts. The goal is to fully engage the entire Charlestown community, secure partnerships and collaborations with all stakeholders, assess community needs, collect baseline data, secure grant funding, develop multiple interventions within different domains, and measure progress through process outcomes and health indicators. Turn It Around is the youth component of the Charlestown Coalition and is a youth enrichment program that works to enhance youth protective factors for youth members and for the community at large.



PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES



The Youth Prevention Worker is a part-time position working primarily with middle-school age youth (ages 11-14) in the Charlestown community. This position includes direct supervision of the youth, and conducting all youth activities, which will be designated in collaboration with the Youth Program Director. This is a year-round position that would require working primarily after school hours with the youth, as well as some weekend days, as needed, depending on the event(s). During the summertime, the worker would be expected to help the Youth Program Director supervise the summer program participants.


The principal duties and responsibilities include:


  • Regular and timely presence at work premises

  • In coordination with the Youth Program Director, design programs and create a program schedule to engage youth in constructive educational, recreational, and volunteer activities; With focus on activities and programs that provide academic enrichment, education and prevention of at-risk behaviors

  • Interact frequently, effectively, and respectfully with youth and their families

  • Provide parental support and educational sessions around risky behavior

  • Partner with Charlestown schools and MGH Charlestown Health Center to assist with any prevention curriculum

  • Encourage and model social behavior and expectations that are developmentally appropriate

  • Use positive behavior management techniques

  • Maintain confidentiality

  • Ensure that youth participants are appropriately supervised and accounted for at all times

  • Maintain and follow all safety and health rules of the program

  • Stay up to date on latest youth prevention trainings






Qualifications

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:





  • Experience working with youth

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Strong computer skills. Proficient in all Microsoft Applications, including MS Office and PowerPoint

  • Strong written and verbal skills

  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task

  • Strong time management and planning skills

  • Ability to trouble-shoot challenges and engage a wide range of stakeholders

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a team member in multicultural settings

  • Ability to interact and communicate very effectively with all levels of students and staff

  • Demonstrated commitment to helping underserved and marginalized populations

  • Bilingual skills preferred



EDUCATION:


High School Diploma required. Bachelor's preferred.


Minimum of 1-3 years' experience working with youth.


EXPERIENCE:


Minimum of 3-4 years' experience working with youth, multicultural communities, and various community stakeholders through the field of social work or public health


Knowledge of substance use prevention framework & importance of coalition building and racial equity in community-based work.


WORKING CONDITIONS:


Flexible schedule required, 20 hours weekly (including occasional evenings and weekends).
