GENERAL SUMMARY / OVERVIEW STATEMENT
The MGH Center for Community Health Improvement (CCHI) collaborates with underserved communities to improve health and carries out the fourth leg of the hospital's mission which is to "improve the health and well-being of the diverse communities we serve." Charlestown is among the communities where MGH has a deep and enduring commitment by providing health care at MGH Charlestown HealthCare Center and through community health improvement via community coalitions, namely The Charlestown Coalition.
MGH is the "backbone" organization to this coalition. Comprised of key community stakeholders, MGH provides coalition staff, evidence-based practices for coalitions to follow, training and technical assistance, grant-writing, evaluation and more. The Charlestown Coalition, supported by MGH CCHI, promotes a healthier community through the development and implementation of policy, systems and environmental changes for the prevention of substance use disorders and other social and structural determinants of health and their effects on residents of Charlestown, Massachusetts. The goal is to fully engage the entire Charlestown community, secure partnerships and collaborations with all stakeholders, assess community needs, collect baseline data, secure grant funding, develop multiple interventions within different domains, and measure progress through process outcomes and health indicators. Turn It Around is the youth component of the Charlestown Coalition and is a youth enrichment program that works to enhance youth protective factors for youth members and for the community at large.
