Scopelitis, Garvin, Light, Hanson & Feary serves the legal and business needs of the transportation industry on a full-service basis. Our legal team is experienced in not only regulatory compliance, but also business structuring and transactions, litigation, insurance, labor and employment, highway accident defense, taxation, mergers and acquisitions, workers' compensation, logistics, driver leasing, warehousing, private fleet operations, outsourcing, and customs. We also represent clients in a variety of other related industries, including those that provide services or products in insurance, alternative workforce strategies, construction and real estate development, manufacturing, retail goods, and professional services. With our principal office in Indianapolis and other offices located coast to coast, we are easily accessible to clients nationwide.

The Firm has an opening for a full-time Transportation/Corporate Paralegal in the Indianapolis office. The Firm has developed an optional 3-2 hybrid work schedule where employees are expected to work from the Indianapolis office at least three days per week and may opt to work from home up to two days per week.

The Opportunity

The candidate will provide diverse paralegal services, including governmental agency and corporate work, under the supervision of his or her assigned attorneys. Those services include drafting correspondence, contacting governmental agencies, and legal research utilizing Westlaw and Lexis. The work will generally not involve litigation, estate, workers’ compensation, or employment law issues. Responsibilities will require the ability to efficiently operate a personal computer utilizing Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and timekeeping software. Experience with Juris, iTimeKeep or Aderant Timekeeping software is beneficial. Candidates should be motivated and accountable, with good communication organizational and time-management skills.

Education and Certification Requirements


  • Formal legal training resulting, at a minimum, in a Certificate of Completion of Paralegal Course of Study from an accredited college or university, or an Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Paralegal Studies from an accredited college or university or the equivalent; and

  • Three or more years’ experience in a law firm performing paralegal duties.

Essential Job Duties


  • Preparation of original correspondence involving critical thinking and writing skills;

  • Drafting work product with minimal instructions;

  • Handling complex projects;

  • Familiarity with transportation- industry regulations (not a prerequisite but beneficial);

  • Experience required with respect to forming corporations and limited liability companies;

  • Experience with foreign admission filings;

  • Completion of daily billing records in an accurate and timely manner;

  • Substantial telephone contact with clients and various federal and state agencies;

  • Taking the initiative to contribute new ideas and to maintain a working knowledge of relevant practice areas and clients;

  • Ability to plan daily work, set priorities, and manage time to ensure work is timely and efficiently completed;

  • Working overtime on occasion, although weekend work is generally not required; and

  • Performing other duties, responsibilities, and special projects as assigned.
