The Vice President of Underwriting Analytics is responsible for leading the Small Business Division’s portfolio management and advanced analytics strategy and execution. Leading a cross-functional team of actuaries, data scientists and analysts, this individual’s responsibilities span P&L management, data strategy, pricing, modeling, AI/ML and performance monitoring for the Small Business Division’s Underwriting & Portfolio Management Domain. This senior leader will be responsible for driving the divisions advancement in underwriting capabilities in a fully automated, digital distribution environment across all P&C lines.

 

Responsibilities


  • Direct responsibility for underwriting performance, including production and ultimate P&L results for the Division, aligned directly to Division CUO  

  • Set advanced analytics vision for underwriting and portfolio management; drive innovation, process modernization and effective use of data platforms   

  • Oversee execution of digital transformation initiatives under an Agile, dynamic operating model

  • Lead cross-functional teams of actuaries, data scientists, engineers, product and portfolio managers and business analysts to develop new portfolio management capabilities and oversee operating performance

  • Act as key partner for the divisions Lead Actuary; collaborate to develop an efficient operating model for actuarial and analytics strategy and execution within the digital transformation

  • Oversee execution of modeling, pricing and underwriting action to achieve adequacy and mix objectives


  • Continuously monitor the health and performance of the portfolio – develop a rigorous portfolio management process to accurately monitor achieved rate changes, new business adequacy, and mix


  • Innovate upon existing foundational capabilities (i.e. technology infrastructure, data platforms, BI tools) to promote speed, efficiency and data-centricity

  • Lead the development of predictive models and machine learning models to support profitability, profile trending, exposure level analysis, underwriting model performance and competitive position


  • Foster data integrity, quantitative discipline, and analytical rigor, including the continuous enhancement of 1st and 3rd party data used in modeling, underwriting and monitoring 

 

Qualifications:

 


  • 8+ years of experience within property & casualty pricing, advanced analytics and portfolio management

  • Demonstrated actuarial proficiency in automated digital-first ecosystems

  • BS Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial or Computer Science, or a related quantitative field; MS advanced degrees and ACAS/FCAS preferred  

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to manage and motivate staff

  • Excellent analytical and quantitative analysis skills

  • Proficiency in SAS, SQL, Python or R; RADAR a strong plus

  • Strong familiarity and strategic vision for technological innovation across platforms, data, and analytics

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Excellent business acumen and strategic thinking

  • Integrity, objectivity, and self-confidence

  • Ability to project influence and affect outcomes
