Towson University invites applications for an Analytical Instrument Support Specialist to provide research and instructional support for the instrumentation in the Department of Chemistry within the Fisher College of Science and Mathematics. Applicants should have extensive experience working with advanced scientific instruments and the ability to learn additional instrumentation. Core instrumentation in the department includes GC-MS, HPLC, UPLC-MS, NMR, and FT-IR, among others. These instruments serve a diverse group of faculty and students in various aspects of Chemistry and Forensic Chemistry with collaborating faculty in Biology, Geosciences and Material Science.

Responsibilities and Duties The Instrument Support Specialist will be responsible for the oversight, routine maintenance and troubleshooting of instruments, oversight and development of new analytical methods and QA/QC protocols, training of faculty and student users and general operational support for the instrumental laboratory facilities. Additional opportunities may be available to participate in research projects, outreach, and contractual work.

This Instrument Support Specialist will oversee instruments and facilities in Towson University's new Science Complex. The Science Complex is the largest academic building on Towson University's campus. Located along York Road just south of historic Stephens Hall, it supports modern scientific research and instruction. The Instrument Support Specialist will work closely with the faculty, staff and students in the Department of Chemistry to ensure safe, efficient and accurate operation of the department's instrumental resources.

Qualifications and Skills


  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or closely related field. At least three years of experience independently operating, troubleshooting and maintaining diverse chromatographic and/or spectroscopic instrumentation. The Instrument Support Specialist will be a scientist with demonstrable technical skills and excellent work habits. Candidates should be able to work equally well either independently or in a team setting. Excellent communication skills are necessary to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students and to provide instrument training. Demonstrated organizational skills; a strong understanding of technology and ability to troubleshoot/problem-solve a variety of issues; and demonstrated experience working collaboratively with peers to resolve issues and develop solutions.

Preferred:


  • Graduate degree in chemistry or closely related field.

  • Experience managing a laboratory with diverse instrumentation.
