POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the Direction of the Maintenance Manager, the Boiler Technician's base function is to repair and operate the two main high pressure boilers at the main campus boiler plant and the smaller packaged boilers in other buildings throughout the campus, some of which are used for building heat and some are used for domestic hot water generation. This position will also be responsible for operating the two centrifugal chillers at the campus main chiller plant.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKS:
Operates and maintains steam generating and distribution equipment and centrifugal chiller equipment and performs necessary adjustments, calibrations and set point adjustments.
Performs diagnostic troubleshooting of boilers and chillers, determines parts that are needed for corrective repairs, orders parts and installs them.
Maintains accurate operational logs.
Conducts boiler water analysis and add chemical treatment according to specifications.
Adjustment of digital control systems to comply with operational schedules and code compliance.
Performs scheduling/commissioning of different mechanical systems used in steam generation and distribution.
Maintain the readiness of stand-by equipment.
Perform preventive maintenance of boiler and chiller equipment.
Perform appropriate seasonal mothballing of certain boilers and chillers.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
EQUIPMENT/COMPUTER SKILLS:
This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Suite software and Adobe Reader are required.
Practical knowledge of boilers, steam distribution systems, pumps, motors, centrifugal chillers, electrical/pneumatic controls, boiler water chemistry and additional of treatment.
Ability to use tools and test equipment associated with power plant operations.
Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relationship with staff, faculty, students, and University officials and general public.
Adhere to safety regulations provided by University and city policies and governmental regulatory entities, such as, OSHA.
HVAC and/or boiler repair and operational experience required
