Summary of Duties:


The videographer/editor is responsible for conceptualizing, developing, producing, shooting, performing audio and video edits, manipulating/creating basic graphics, and delivering professional broadcast quality audio and video on a variety of video productions to be used to advance the mission and reputation of Washington State University. A part of a three-person video team, this position shoots videos for a wide variety of audiences, including prospective and current students, alumni, employees, and the general public.



The videographer works closely with the University Marketing and Communications design team and others to coordinate art direction of video productions with related web, social media, and print design projects.



Primary videography responsibilities include researching, conceptualizing, producing and shooting video productions for social media and web deployment. This position is responsible for the technical tasks related to production of video images. The incumbent will transport, setup and operate equipment, and assist with location scouting, staging, lighting, and set preparation and design. This position works closely with graphic designers and other members of the University Marketing and Communications team to ensure all videos are created within WSU's brand identity guidelines.



Primary editing responsibilities include performing edits of both audio and video to create a story (story edits), and creating basic graphics or work with graphics provided to the editor from a third party, such as titles, lower-third graphics, and end credits. In addition, this position is also required to color correct video and process audio to accepted industry or broadcast standards. The videographer is expected to deliver the final video product to clients in an agreed upon format that meets or exceeds industry or broadcast standards.



The videographer possesses a passion for team building and a strong commitment to creating a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment. The incumbent will be required to shoot video/perform edits at a wide variety of events and locations, which may occur evenings and/or weekends. Regional travel with a flexible schedule is to be expected.

Essential Duties:



Videography | 45 %




  • In collaboration with University Marketing and Communications staff and its clients, research, conceptualize, storyboard, and shoot very high-quality video that suits the project at hand.




  • Manage and perform technical tasks related to video production and post- production, including capturing high-quality audio.




  • Transport, setup and operate equipment, and assist with location scouting, staging, lighting, and set preparation and design.






Editing | 40%




  • Edit and finalize videos to the highest production standards and according to the University Marketing and Communications' client's needs and as storyboarded or conceptualized, including color correction, audio processing, and titling / motion graphics.






Production Coordination and Client Meetings | 5%




  • Attend planning meetings with University Marketing and Communications staff and clients. Take direction from unit and/or project manager regarding production timelines and pre- and post-production duties.




  • Coordinate screenings of draft videos for clients and collaborators.




  • Supervise production scheduling, including planning for and arranging travel, moving equipment to shoot sites, scheduling with interview subjects, and long- range planning of seasonal B-roll shoots.






Mentor | 5%




  • Participate in the University Marketing and Communications culture of cross-training colleagues so that they are better informed about the skills and processing involved with video production; mentor interns and students in the craft of video production.






Other | 5%




  • Other duties as assigned.






Required Qualifications:


A Bachelor's degree in broadcast communications or a related field and two (2) years of professional level experience in areas such as editing and producing audio and/or video for various types of media; writing feature and promotional copy; and operating video cameras. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.




Additional Requirements:




  • Experience with audio and video equipment, either in a studio or remote field production.




  • Ability to design and set lighting for interviews or B-roll scenes




  • Experience with Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook. Excellent written and verbal communications skills.




  • Ability to work as a member of team operating under strict deadlines.




  • A strong commitment to creating a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment.




  • Ability to coordinate complex schedules, work a flexible schedule, travel, drive long distances, work occasional irregular hours




  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. of equipment 50 or more yards.




  • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver's license.







Preferred Qualifications:




  • Knowledge of Canon, Sony, Panasonic, and Blackmagic DSLR and digital video cameras.




  • Two (2) or more years of experience in conducting documentary-style interviews, including researching subject matter and crafting interview questions.




  • Excellent interviewing skills with the ability to draw people out in conversation.




  • Skilled in story development and concept refinement. Able to take complex stories and communicate them in simple, easy-to-follow terms.




  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, specifically Adobe Premiere, After Effects and Photoshop, and Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve.
