Principal Engineer - Therapy Delivery Group, Aortic

This engineering position requires strong technical and leadership skills to support the design and development of innovative, new products within Medtronic Aortic Research and Development. The Principal Research and Development Engineer will apply advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts on complex technical problems, and will provide technical leadership of projects from concept generation through early phase development. The engineer will work under the general direction of the project lead but will have latitude in determining methods of solving problems, design and construction of prototypes, and creation of test methods with associated product testing. The engineer will participate in cross-functional development teams that are responsible for different aspects of the project such as implant and/or delivery system development and pre-clinical evaluations.

A Day in the Life

Work on a cross-functional team in the design and development of an innovative stent graft system. Influence the design of the product, development of the processes, and the definition of the procedure. Collaborate with physicians and internal advisors to drive the development of the device and the procedure and communicate progress and risks to management and team. Apply engineering judgement, experience, advanced problem-solving skills, critical thinking, technical principles, and theories to solve complex design and procedural challenge. Provide engineering and technical support to pre-clinical evaluations. Act as advisor and mentor to other engineers, technicians, and team members.

General Engineering Aspects


  • Generate mechanical designs using SolidWorks and work with a variety of vendors to rapidly prototype new concepts for testing and evaluation
  • Expertise in the development, testing and manufacture of implantable medical devices
  • Research and integrate new technologies and materials through the understanding and utilization of extensive technical knowledge and understanding of complex ideas, concepts, and theories
  • Utilize advanced experimental design methodologies, with significant complexity, and execute test protocols and reports to facilitate the design of medical devices
  • Analyze data using advanced statistical techniques and communicate results to a cross-functional team
  • Utilize a high level of technical expertise to design and develop complex new test methods and equipment
  • Collaborate with people inside and outside of the company, as well as identify vendors and external partners needed throughout the development process
  • Develop complex solutions to technical problems that are aligned with the strategies and goals of the organization
  • Employ systems engineering principles in sub-system and system design flow
  • Meet with physicians at conferences, roundtables, etc. and attend field visits to enhance innovation and customer engagement
  • Support our intellectual property portfolio through generation and support of novel ideas and product concepts
  • Document research and development process through lab notebooks or other methods

Must Have: Minimum Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree in engineering - Advanced technical degree is preferred
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in medical device product development or 6 years of experience with advanced degree

  • Experience with medical device product development
  • Excellent communication skills with internal and external customers at various levels (written and verbal)
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to negotiate with others to reach understanding or agreement
  • Knowledge of Mitral Valve/Aortic Valve repair/replacement, disease, and delivery systems
  • High level proficiency of technical principles, theories, and design concepts in the field of medical device design
  • Experience with the design and assembly of complex catheter-based delivery systems
  • Training and experience in MBSE - Model Based Systems Engineering
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis and applications
