Nature of Work

The Ashar lab in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine are seeking to fill a Postdoctoral Fellow position focused on the brain mechanisms of primary (nociplastic) chronic pain and its treatment. This is an opportunity to contribute to the development of a novel psychological treatment paradigm aiming to provide substantial relief or recovery from chronic pain. Primary responsibilities include a) oversight of a large clinical trial using natural language, daily experience sampling, and audio-video recordings to investigate the mechanisms of pain reprocessing therapy, and b) an fMRI investigation of distinct brain pathways supporting nociceptive vs. nociplastic chronic knee pain and brain mechanisms of cognitive pain regulation strategies. There will be ample opportunities to support other emerging lines of research in the lab on interoceptive function and chronic pain, opioid tapering interventions, brain mechanisms of cannabis-based pain relief, psychological treatments for "long COVID", and psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. Opportunities for manuscript preparation, conference submissions, and funding applications will be available. The Postdoctoral Fellow will collaborate closely with Dr. Joseph Frank, director of the Chronic Pain and Wellness Center at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus Veterans Administration. The position is hybrid in-person/remote, and the applicant must be available to work on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus several days a week.

Examples of Work Performed

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
  • Oversee study design and data collection, including clinical trials and fMRI investigations of brain function
  • Analyze multiple datasets, including features extracted from audio-video recordings, natural language data, resting and task-based fMRI
  • Coordinate research assistants working on projects
  • Support IRB applications for new projects
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication

Salary and Benefits

The salary range for this position has been established at $53,760 - $65,292, in alignment with current NIH salary range dependent upon years of postdoctoral experience.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

    Doctorate degree in a relevant field (e.g., psychology, neuroscience, computer science) Record of first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals Experience with chronic pain and/or other related conditions

Preferred Qualifications

    Experience with fMRI study design, data collection, and analysis Experience running clinical trials Knowledge of or experience with primary (nociplastic) pain assessment and treatment Proficiency or expertise with software/scripting (MATLAB, Python, and R preferred)
