Position Summary

The System Performance Engineer – Level 3 is the In-service Performance focal for Regional Team and Program management. He/She is also expected to lead and drive all in-service activities of the assigned projects and bring technical expertise to the team and projects.  In addition, this role contributes to Customer Satisfaction by monitoring performance for all the in service systems and proposing appropriate solutions to mitigate or resolve the in service issues. The System Performance Engineer – Level 3 is expected to handle the most complex and or multiple customer accounts simultaneously as well as drive design changes to improve in-service performances.

Essential Functions / Key Areas of Responsibility


  • Be the in service lead for critical account

    be the focal point for Program management for in-service activity


    Proactively monitor the performance for the in service systems and provide maintenance recommendation to keep high system performance level


    Analyze critical event or low performing aircrafts and provide maintenance recommendation for recovery


    Is able to influence internal / external customers/stakeholders


    Define and execute processes for team improvement, templates and KPIs


    Participate retrofit activity and system installation on aircraft (including witnessing or running SIP or GFTP)



  • Triage and characterize the in service issues and lead the investigation to resolution:

    Anticipates problems and prevents them by effectively planning, communicating, and implementing alternative solutions


    Monitor feedback from field (including customer, cabin crew, line maintenance, engineering, etc.) and define containment actions


    Leads cross functional teams in analyzing problems, making recommendations, defining priorities and implementing solutions


    Define scope of work and next steps for the system support engineering to ensure investigation resolution


    Perform aircraft level troubleshooting and manage the implementation of corrective actions


    Open tickets to supplier for new issue and coordinate investigation to resolution



  • Support solution development

    Support activity for long term solution including defining SOW for FSAT, define and execute on wing monitoring plan


    Proposes and monitors solutions to address current critical in service issues and improve system performance and customer satisfaction


    Responsible for the in-service deployment strategy for the assigned accounts and ensures coordination of SW releases or systems improvements.


    Provides visibility on accomplishments and progress on monitored issues



  • Develop and drive communications plan

    Create ‘communication kits’ about product performance and share them with management, customer or other team in the organization.


    Able to represent Thales when working with an OEM, Customer or supplier


    Provide feedback or input for improvements of monitoring tools (ground tool, parser, on wing tool) and processes


    Presents ideas effectively to internal and external personnel



  • This job may require some supervisory responsibilities of other team members at a project level

Minimum Requirements: Skills, Experience & Education


  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or related field. Will consider totality of work experience in lieu of degree.

  • 8+ years of experience in sustaining, design, system integration, and/or product support engineering role via professional work experience.

  • Be capable of interpreting mechanical and electrical wiring diagrams.

  • Have knowledge of Linux and Shell scripting, as well as capable to read and interpret C++ and PHP code.

  • Be capable of understanding SW design and concepts and explaining how the SW utilizes the HW

  • Have understanding of commercial aircrafts avionic systems, major communication buses and interfaces with cabin equipment’s

  • Skilled in troubleshooting, investigating and resolving hardware/software/system technical issues.

  • Ability to communicate through all levels of the organization, as well as external customers and Field/Repair Shop personnel through verbal and written communication.

  • Highly organized individual with the ability to document findings/test results, track priorities, and co-ordinate resolution of engineering issues.

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a team member and provide regular status reports of issue progress.

  • Uses independent judgment to ensure projects/assignments are completed accurately and on-time.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Familiarity with system, hardware & software development processes ( DO-178C, DO-254, DO-160G etc).

  • Familiar with ARINC standards applicable to IFE and/or Airborne Satcom systems

  • Experience working with network systems and networking principles, data, voice, or video.

  • Experience working with network software and hardware, data, voice, or video.

  • Experience in the avionics industry.

  • Familiar with FAA requirements applicable to Satcom & avionic installations, such as Technical Standard Orders, Supplemental Type Certificates, FARs, and flight testing of satellite systems

  • Familiar with industry requirements for airborne Satcom & avionic systems, such as ARINC, RTCA, SAE, and FCC

  • Master’s or other advanced degree is preferred

Physical Demands


  • Light physical effort required by handling objects up to 20 pounds occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.  (Light)

  • Normal office environment and air-conditioned electronic lab.

  • Secondary work environments may include occasional access to aircraft hangars or warehouse facilities.

Special Position Requirements:


  • The position may require travel (less than 20%)

  • Up-to-date passport and ability to travel within and outside of the U.S. on short notice.
