Sr. Project Engineer - Medical Testing

Intertek is searching for a Sr. Project Engineer - Medical Testing to join our Electricalteam in our Boxborough, MA office. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Sr. Project Engineer is responsible for independently performing testing and evaluation on a variety of products to the requirements of U.S., Canadian and other international product safety standards; writing reports; and communicating with clients. This position is also responsible for providing local expertise in one or more product categories and mentoring and training less senior technical personnel and assisting with scoping and scheduling project work for the Safety and Performance teams within this location.

The Sr. Project Engineer reports to medical engineering team leader(s).

  • Independently, conduct on and off-site evaluation of products to determine compliance with applicable standard(s). The Sr. Project Engineer is responsible for more complex projects. To do this, the Sr. Project Engineer must:

    • Read and determine applicability of national codes and standards clauses for the EUT (equipment under test ).
    • Read and understand schematics and manufacturing instructions.
    • Validate the project scope and sample applicability.
    • For scope of the project, identify and locate test instruments and equipment required for testing and project execution.
    • Follow established test plan(s ).
    • Set up and operate EUT; perform and document simple repairs on EUT as needed.
    • Conduct thorough construction review and document results.
    • Perform testing of products in accordance with standards and requirements. Core tests include, but are not limited to power input rating, leakage current, dielectric strength, temperature profiling, pressure, stability, mechanical hazards, flammability, abnormal and fault insurance, ingress of liquids and solids, and patient monitoring standards. Others as applicable per project and compliance requirements
  • Train and mentor less senior technical staff.
  • Investigate technical complaints for the local office and support accreditations efforts by performing technical audits locally.
  • Demonstrate enough product and/or standards knowledge to be considered an expert in multiple product categories for the local office, ideally including:

    • ISO 14971, IEC 60601-1, IEC 60601-1-6 + 62366, IEC 60601-1-8, IEC 60601-1-9, IEC 60601-1-11, IEC 62304, IEC 60601-2-25, IEC 60601-2-27, IEC 80601-2-30, IEC 60601-2-46, IEC 60601-2-49, IEC 60601-2-52, ISO 80601-2-56, ISO 80601-2-61, etc.
  • Set up and operate standard test equipment including, but not limited to: power supplies, oscilloscope, multi-meter, dielectric strength tester, ground continuity tester, digital multi-meter, high voltage probes, data logging equipment, environmental chambers, articulated probes. Use hand tools to build/calibrate test fixtures.
  • Provide quotations for a large array of standards and complex projects and products performed within the specific lab.
  • Perform preliminary design reviews (PDR) both on and off site.
  • Follow sample handling procedures, ensuring that sample is logged in and out of the system. Move equipment as needed through the facility. Properly package sample for shipment.
  • Perform other work as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE


  • Bachelor's degree in engineering
  • 5-7 years directly related experience; prefer prior project management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with U.S., Canadian, and other international product safety standards, i.e., ANSI, CSA, UL, EN, IEC are preferred (as outlined within the complete list of standards detail above)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to make technical decisions and engineering judgments independently within established parameters.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
  • Professional Communication and presentation skills via in-person, electronic and other relevant forms of interaction with clients, inter-company teams and other 3rd party stakeholders.
  • Microsoft Office expertise.
  • Ability to travel as business needs dictate.
  • A valid driver's license and reliable driving record is required.
