Job Description:

UTHealth Houston is looking for a Systems Administrator to be a part of the Infrastructure & Operational Support group within DCO. This team focuses on messaging, Active Directory, load balancing, Linux, DNS, mobile device management, Citrix & other enterprise-level systems in addition to many smaller systems and applications. Support for these systems includes design, implementation, support, patching, troubleshooting, and working closely with application owners, peers, and customers to help with performance tuning, troubleshooting and upgrades.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) is the most comprehensive academic health center in the UT System. Data Center Operations (DCO) under the direction of the Infrastructure Team at UTHealth Houston, operates the university's primary data centers at UCT and Guhn Rd. DCO also administers standards for other data centers that are a part of the UTHealth campus. DCO is comprised of five areas: Database & Application Support, Infrastructure & Operational Support, Data Center Operations Services, SPH Data Center Management / Virtualization Team, and the Cloud Team.

Position Summary:

Responsible for the day-to-day activities related to system stability, reliability, and security.

Position Key Accountabilities:

1. Utilizes appropriate procedures and processes necessary to ensure the safety and integrity of organizational servers, data systems, file structures, computer operating systems and computer system software.
2. Installs, maintains, configures, and upgrades UNIX operating systems to improve the reliability, safety and performance of the system.
3. Works with Network Security Analyst to ensure security and integrity of computer operating systems and supporting software by detecting hackers and ensuring remote access is encrypted.
4. Ensures data/media recoverability by implementing a schedule of system backups and database archive operations in conjunction with the Disaster Recovery & Security Analyst.
5. Performs basic and intermediate level shell and kernel programming and testing.
6. Conducts studies of projected enhancements in hardware and software and presents recommendations to management.
7. Conducts performance measurement and evaluation of the servers to ensure Service Level Agreements (SLA) are met.
8. Implements security and the disaster recovery according to established standards policy and guidelines.
9. Participates in all phases of total system planning and in the generation of justifications and specifications for facility requirements and enhancements.
10. Implements system software projects.
11. Presents technical briefings.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Ability to configure and administer diverse servers and computer operating systems. Familiar with WEB technology, database concepts and networking.

Required Skills:



  • Customer Service / Collaboration / Transparency: Customer service, collaboration, and transparency are pillars the Data Center Operations mindset and critical to the success of our mission.

  • Server Administration: Windows Server 2016+, includes installation of servers, operating systems, configuration, security and troubleshooting of specialized systems and applications. This includes physical and virtual systems. Also, a good working knowledge of storage sub-systems as related to system configuration and optimization.

  • Client/Server Application support: Backend systems support for client-server applications with a good understanding of the system design lifecycle (SDLC). Proven implementation skills for enterprise level solutions. Experience with SSL cert configuration and management. A basic understanding of networking technologies. Also, a working knowledge of system monitoring tools.

  • Organizational Skills: Ability to understand project methodology and project management. Use of Microsoft Teams and M365 tools such as Planner.

  • Communication and Teamwork: Ability to communicate both written or orally to a wide variety of audiences. Must have the ability to think logically in solving problems, as well as implement workable solutions. Must be able to resolve all problems existing and newly discovered to move the project towards completion.
  • Must be able to work in both a team environment as well as a self-contributor, in meeting all project related goals.
  • Candidates should have a broad scope of technical capabilities that will enable them to handle all aspects of application management as well as communicate and discuss technical design issues and problem resolution with Application Administrators, other Systems Administrators, and customers.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's degree, training in information technology or related experience in lieu of education.

Minimum Experience:

One (1) year of experience in information technology support and systems administration in diverse environments. Preferred experience with the network and server hardware, software and security tools that UTHSC-H has deployed in its information technology infrastructure.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas. Or be willing to relocate within three (3) months to the state of Texas.
