UT Pediatric General & thoracic surgery offers state-of-the-art comprehensive care for congenital and acquired surgical problems. Our team evaluates and manages specific conditions that affect the fetus, neonates, infants, children, and adolescents. In addition, we have several multi-disciplinary clinics to help provide our patients with comprehensive care by a team of providers.

The pediatric surgical nurse uses a patient and family-centered care approach to provide for patients requiring surgical intervention in a variety of settings. Utilizing evidence-based practice guidelines, pediatric surgical nurses focus on the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities for children from newborn through young adulthood with an array of surgical issues. They serve as clinicians, researchers, educators, mentors, advocates, and administrators. Pediatric surgical nursing strives for the prevention of illness and injury, the restoration of health, and the maximization of comfort in health conditions and at the end of life, through diagnosis, treatment, and management of the child's condition that requires surgical intervention.

Monday-Friday/8-5 schedule, no weekends, no call time.

The registered nurse will function as a valued member of a collaborative interdisciplinary team. They will help with patient education, assist in clinic with procedures, dressing changes, phone triage, and assist in our multi-disciplinary specialty clinics. Position Summary:

Monday-Friday /8-5 schedule; no weekends.

Primary Location: The Medical Center at 6410 Fannin. Houston, TX 77030

This may involve travel to satellite offices in the future.

Performs safe, effective clinical care for infants through adolescents in a pediatric specialty clinic utilizing the nursing process. Duties will include phone triage, coordination of medical assistants, assist in clinic procedures. Will provide patient education especially regarding gastrostomy tubes and burn dressing changes with families. Will assist in the coordination of multi-disciplinary clinics. Will help with patient phone calls and orders. Will collaborate with team members to provide patient care.

Performs safe, effective clinical care for children and adolescents utilizing the nursing process. Demonstrates advanced nursing skills aimed at ensuring optimal patient care, effective communication, and efficiency. Supports nursing research by participating in research activities, when appropriate. Assists in continuing education by assisting with teaching and orientation of staff and students. Collaborates with leadership to coordinate and implement performance improvement activities for the clinic. Provides outreach and education to hospitals and coordinates community-based services to follow treatment plans.

Position Key Accountabilities:

1. Provides direct patient care approximately 50% of the time
2. Effectively manages all aspects of the patient care process, and documents patient care and outcomes.
3. Participates in regularly scheduled team conferences, as required, and collaborates with related health care providers in treatment, planning, and the provision of care.
4. Functions as the nursing liaison with physicians, other multidisciplinary team members, and community agencies/resources.
5. May promote treatment advances available through the clinicians and expand the referral base for the program through regular contact with community physicians and hospitals.
6. Serves as a resource for staff, including the provision of information concerning evidenced based practice for procedures and other patient care developments.
7. Participates in the development of nursing policies and instructional materials for staff/students.
8. Acts as the lead nurse regarding the management of supplies, equipment, and the patient care environment, including notifying support departments of repairs needed for damaged property, equipment, etc.
9. Prepares and maintains reports concerning operations, as requested.
10. Assists in resolving interdepartmental/intradepartmental clinical problems and/or patient concerns, and leads identified performance improvement initiatives (chart reviews, PI initiatives, etc.).
11. Provides coaching and timely performance feedback to staff, as needed, and reports to the Practice Manager/Supervising Physician for continued follow-up with staff.
12. Assists in the coordination of patient care conferences, etc., as indicated.
13. Insures timely completion of monitors/logs for quality control and performance improvement monitoring.
14. Manages other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Current nursing licensure in the State of Texas. Certification in the area of specialty preferred.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's degree in nursing plus three years of nursing experience, OR
Associates degree in nursing plus five years of nursing experience, OR
Nursing diploma (3-year program) plus four years of nursing experience.

Minimum Experience:

Three (3) years of clinical nursing experience is required. Recent clinical experience in the area of specialty preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Security Sensitive:

This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215

Certification/Skills:

Current nursing licensure in the State of Texas. Certification in the area of specialty preferred.
