The Orthoptist will evaluate and treatment patients with disorders of the visual system with an emphasis on binocular vision and eye movements. The Orthoptist will diagnose and work under the direction of the Ophthalmologist. The Orthoptist will serve patients of all ages, and because of the nature of many binocular disorders, commonly works in pediatric ophthalmology settings where the majority of patients are children. 

The Orthoptist will provide evaluation, understanding and treatment to children and adults with disorders affecting visual function. The Orthoptist will combine diagnostic ability, technical understanding and therapeutic skills.  The Orthoptist should have knowledge, understanding and ability to operate visual testing equipment, medical terminology and anatomy. 

The Orthoptist should have communication skills for frequent and challenging contact with physicians, employees, patients, families; requires patience and compassion.  The Orthoptist should have critical thinking skills as it relates to specialized departments which include the ability to complete age appropriate assessments and the ability to effectively organize and prioritize tasks in order to complete assignments within the time allotted and maintains standard workflow.

The ideal Orthoptist should have graduated with Bachelor's degree or a nationally recognized Orthoptic fellowship.  The Orthoptist should have certification by the American Orthoptic Council.  The Orthoptist should have 5 years of experience in an outpatient clinic.
