Asphalt Position Overview :
Our paid internship program provides a rich and rewarding hands on learning experience and the opportunity to make a contribution to our organization. Our interns work in their course of study under close direction of an experienced supervisor/manager. The Asphalt Intern supports the Plant Manager/Plant Supervisor at the assigned asphalt facility.

Roles and Responsibilities
(Essential Duties and Functions)


  • Work with Plant Crews & Shadow Plant Manager/Supervisor

  • Assist Asphalt Plant Manager/Supervisor with daily duties.

  • Work hand in hand with Plant Manager, Supervisor & Plant crews to learn Hot Mix Asphalt Plant Operations from both a field and managerial standpoint.

  • Spend time working with Plant Operators running asphalt plants. Work with ground crew and loader operator. Learn scale/ticketing operations. Assist with general maintenance of the plant.

  • Supports product quality and customer service by maintaining strong line of communication with plant manager, Plant Supervisor, Quality Control and supporting lines of business (LOB).

  • Reviews and analyzes reports, records, directives, regulations, and confers with plant manager/supervisor to obtain data for required planning of activities.

  • Assists in preparing work schedules.

  • Assists in managing personnel in preparing work areas for upcoming maintenance activities and obtaining supplies necessary for maintenance.

  • Completes required reports and records for management.

  • Evaluates procedures and practices for alternate methods and improvements.

  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in Tilcon New York's and CRH safety policies and procedures.

  • Adhere to all applicable regulations including Safety and Health Administration and (OSHA) Occupational Safety and Health Administration affecting asphalt plant production, safety, environmental, state, federal, and company policies; ensure observance and compliance of such regulations.

  • Regular and timely attendance is required.

  • Additional duties as assigned or required.

  • Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should be able to type and use keyboards accurately and be skilled in Microsoft Office Suite and Database software

Education/Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Qualified undergraduate student enrolled in one of the following degrees or related programs: Quality Control, Sales, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mine Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management.

Construction Management Position Overview:

A Construction Management Intern will be given the opportunity to work with a vertically integrated company and experience multiple aspects of construction management as well as other lines of business. This individual will begin their internship in estimating where they will learn construction conceptually. After a few weeks of estimating, the intern will work in the field supporting our crews. This will give the intern the ability to see how a job progresses from bid to build. Finally, the intern will spend time with the administrative staff to learn financial aspects of various construction jobs.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • An intern in construction management will spend the bulk of his/her time focusing on construction activities that include:

    • Project management (public and private jobs).

      • Learn how to find, bid, and build heavy construction projects.

      • Work with current bidding software.

      • Set up contracts and subcontracts.

      • Work with estimators.

      • Work with project managers and construction crew foreman.



    • Construction crews

      • Working on a construction crew and/or prep crew.

      • Spend time with foreman learning how to prepare for the job and set up job.

      • Learn about construction equipment - various uses and skills required.



    • Business management

      • Work with Operations Manager/accounting on monthly projections.

      • Understand job cost.

      • Review workload.

      • Understand basics with P&L.

      • Review financial statements.

      • Union CBA's - talent management.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education and Experience

Working towards a Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Construction Management, Operations Management, Project Management, Finance, Business Management, or Civil Engineering from a college or technical school; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be proficient with Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
