Senior Lease Accountant at Genesee and Wyoming Railroad in Rochester, New York

SUMMARY:


This position will focus on owning the Company’s U.S. lease accounting activities and the global consolidation and reporting for leases and will report to the Assistant Controller. The owner of this role will manage lease additions, modifications, terminations, and internal and external reporting related to leases. G&W is progressing through a finance transformation and the role will also have opportunities to develop new skills and have exposure to new technologies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Master data management (entering new leases, processing modifications, terminations and other lease changes) for our U.S. leasing portfolio within our lease accounting software  

  • Posting monthly journal entries, preparing monthly general ledger reconciliations including lease roll-forwards under both U.S. GAAP and IFRS 

  • Facilitate monthly data feeds for foreign currency exchange rates and incremental borrowing rate uploads to the Company’s lease software 

  • Drive the annual impairment testing for leases 

  • Owns external financial reporting for leases - consolidate lease roll-forwards under IFRS to support IFRS reporting and preparation of US GAAP footnote and required disclosures 

  • Support ERP team in migrating to Microsoft Dynamics 365 (MS D365) leasing module 

  • Develop into a subject matter expert (SME) on MS D365 leasing module to lead and partner with our non-US locations for their leasing re-implementation 

  • Communicate and coordinate with other departments and regional personnel and provide lease accounting support 

  • Ensure compliance with corporate policies, procedures and internal controls 

  • Prepare for and participate in internal and external audits in functional area 

  • Actively participate in initiatives to continuously improve the ability to be an effective business partner through process improvement and automation 

  • Represent the function in special projects and assignments 

  • Perform other accounting duties, as required 


REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:



  • Highly motivated individual capable of managing multiple tasks and continuously evaluating priorities to lead tasks/projects to completion in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong communication skills, both verbally and written.

  • Strong technical skills, including experience with property tax software and ERP systems as well as Power BI and Microsoft applications.

  • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner, gather and analyze information skillfully, and develop alternative solutions.

  • Ability to build trust by treating customers, peers, and others with integrity and respect, upholding organizational values, and keeping commitments

  • Ability and desire to work in a collaborative team-oriented environment.t with all levels of staff including senior management, department heads, and external parties; contribute to building a positive team spirit; ability to support everyone’s efforts to succeed.

  • Ability to adapt and respond to changing work situations and environments.


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR CREDENTIALS:



  • Intermediate level of expertise in US GAAP ASC 842: Leases

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with 3-4 years relevant experience; Master’s degree and/or CPA a plus

  • Railroad experience not required, but is a plus

  • Microsoft Dynamics 365 or LeaseAccelerator experience not required, but is a plus
