Job Description:

ERM seeks a motivated Principal ESG and Human Rights Consultant with significant experience in industry or consulting to support and grow our ESG, social impact, just transition, human rights and diversity and inclusion services in the US, as well as our social performance practice globally.

ERM provides advisory and technical services to industries that are key to the low carbon transition, such as finance (sustainable financing), mining (critical minerals) and energy (renewables, oil & gas, utilities, transmission, batteries) as well as other companies that are also changing and adapting to climate, social and digital drivers, including technology, chemicals, pharma, food & agriculture, manufacturing and transportation. Social practitioners help companies across the full life cycle of their investments and operations: we help companies prepare to comply with new human rights and environmental regulation and conduct bench markings, human rights due diligence and social impact assessments for permitting and financing; we formulate social impact and community investment strategies; we support engagement with stakeholders and non-governmental organizations; we help companies assess and address remedy in cases of adverse impact; and we support companies reports on social and human rights performance to regulators,  investors and stakeholders.

As a senior leader you will be fully accountable for successfully selling, consulting and supporting our technical excellence communities. The ideal candidate will have established relationships with US companies that operate domestically and globally and will help us expand, in particular, our social impact advisory services, human rights and responsible supply-chain offerings.

ERM is structured to encourage collaboration and networking among disciplines, service lines, industry groups and regional offices, providing opportunities to collaborate with ERM’s global sustainability experts.

This position can be located in any of our California offices or in Washington DC.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • As a “seller/doer,” contribute to expand ERM’s US and North America social performance, human rights and responsible supply chain services by identifying and developing new opportunities, preparing effective technical proposals; and taking active leadership in the development of new delivery tools.
  • Manage projects and delivery teams, providing technical guidance on the formulation and update of human rights policies and human rights management systems; on human rights impact and risk assessments; and on human rights, modern slavery and DE&I reporting.
  • Participate in ERM’s social performance, human rights and other relevant technical communities as well as other for a with documented case studies.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level staff on social performance and human rights.
  • Support global services and global industry commercial initiatives in ERM.
  • Conduct research to support thought leadership on social issues.
  • Participate in industry and technical conferences.

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:


  • Post-graduate degree, preferably in economics, development economics, political science, international relations, sociology, law, or sustainability.

  • 12+ years of experience working in private sector companies, specifically in their procurement, responsible sourcing, human rights, sustainability, corporate citizenship or investor relations functions, or 12+ years working in social sustainability and human rights consulting.

  • Expertise in key frameworks and regulation, such as the UN Guiding Principles on Human Rights, the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, modern slavery reporting, GRI, DJSI, US environmental justice regulation, the IFC Performance Standards and Equator Principles. 

  • Well established reputation and recognized technical expertise in the marketplace.

  • Demonstrated leadership ability to build, coach, and mentor collaborative teams.

  • Ability to navigate large, matrixed organizations and influence colleagues to obtain desired outcomes for the whole of ERM.

  • Critical thinking and excellent communication (written/verbal) skills, including the preparation of memos, reports and visual presentations.

  • Values-driven and a strong sense of ethics.

  • A second language (e.g. French or Spanish) is not required, but desirable.

The typical hiring range for this role is $ 124,122 to 159,773.  This is the typical hiring range we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting.  We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future.  An employee’s pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, any collective bargaining agreements, and business or organizational needs. This job is also eligible for bonus pay.
