Payroll Specialist at Amsted Rail in Granite City, Illinois

Job Description:

Amsted Rail has an immediate opening for a Payroll Specialist at its Granite City, Illinois facility.

This position is responsible for the accurate preparation, documentation, distribution and reconciliation of payroll and the administration of the time keeping system.

• Reviews the computation of pay and associated deductions for accuracy.


• Updates payroll records and processes routine changes to employee records in timekeeping system.


• Performs basic reconciliation and auditing processes during each pay cycle.


• Provides reporting for Finance for reconciliation and reporting related to payroll expenses.


• Follows all processing procedures, adheres to policies, and maintains confidentiality.


• Responds to pay-related inquiries from employees/ HR/ Finance. Researches and resolves errors or omissions.


• Issues, or reissues, physical or replacement checks or direct deposits due to payroll errors or final discharge.


• Maintains, scans and files payroll records for future reference and the lifeline of the employee and have knowledge about document retention laws per state and federal regulations.


• Maintains appropriate documentation to substantiate data entry requests.


• Reviews data entry requests to confirm proper authorizations are present.


• Prepares reports that include summaries of earnings, tax deductions, leave, and non-taxable wages.


• Other duties may be assigned.

• High school diploma or GED preferred


• 1-3 years of proven experience working as a payroll clerk in a fast-paced organization


• Strong clerical, administrative and general office skills with accurate and meticulous in data entry proficiency


• Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and time management skills

• Excellent verbal and written communications; Ability to communicate with all levels of personnel.


• Highly proficient in computer skills and technology, Microsoft Office Suite proficiency, specifically Excel and SAP or other financial software

• Ability to multi-task and work under various conditions that may include frequent interruptions


• Experience using Ultimate Software and/or Kronos timekeeping, or a similar HR system


• Knowledge of wage withholdings orders
